THE STEPPINGSTONE SUMMER ADVISING INTERNSHIP
Summer 2026 Position Description

Why work at Steppingstone this summer?

Here’s what former interns had to say:

“This was one of the best summers of my life. I learned so much it's hard to narrow it down. The kids are all just incredible and this summer helped me realize how important it is to live a purposeful life.”

“Awesomeness. Honestly, I learned a lot of valuable skills and gained a lot of new friends. I enjoyed working with everyone at Steppingstone.”

“It's safe to say that this summer was one of the best and most productive summers I've ever had! I'd do it all over again if I could. I learned what happens behind the scenes in a classroom and gained an even bigger appreciation for all teachers. I experienced classroom management, how to get through all of the curriculum, and planning skills.”

Advising Internship Details

The summer advising internship at Steppingstone provides talented and committed college students with an opportunity to learn about careers in education, educational access, psychology, social work, and the nonprofit sector through firsthand experience working with rising 5th-7th graders in an academically rigorous environment. Participants work closely with other Steppingstone interns, staff, and faculty members on projects both in and outside of the classroom.

Interns also attend and participate in weekly seminars on various relevant topics in education and psychology, including adolescent development, growth mindset, and classroom management best practices. Interns will be paired with an Advisor, who will act as a mentor.

Responsibilities include:

  • Co-teach, with a mentor advisor, classes designed to develop Scholars’ social emotional skills, including lesson preparation
  • Meet weekly with mentor advisor for professional development and feedback, to identify support plans, and to discuss the social emotional needs of Scholars
  • Plan and lead whole-class social emotional lessons with mentor’s support, facilitate and co-facilitate Scholar groups on topics related to Scholars’ goals
  • Provide mentorship to students through academic & social emotional support, 1-on-1 or in a group, during study hall, lunch, and at other times
  • Conduct structured check-ins and lunch bunches to identify Scholars' academic and social strengths, as well as their holistic and psychological needs
  • Substitute teach as necessary

Bus Duty:

  • Serve as bus monitor daily to and from the summer site at Milton Academy and Boston
  • Manage the safety of Scholars during the bus ride
  • While living in the greater Boston area is not required, it is strongly preferred so interns have reasonable access to a bus stop.
  • Steppingstone partners with all interns to ensure their commute to and from their assigned bus stop is manageable.

Other duties

  • Meet weekly for seminars and workshops with the Internship Coordinator and guest speakers
  • Plan and co-teach a weekly elective
  • Plan and co-teach a weekly physical education class
  • Provide logistical support for the administrative staff, including distribution of materials and helping to staff the main office
  • Assist in the supervision of arrival, dismissal, meals, and recess periods
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to assist with program operations
  • Reflect on summer experience in writing and through conversations with Intern Coordinator and other interns
