Volunteer Coordinator

Mass Audubon is the largest nature-based conservation organization in New England. Founded in 1896 by two women who fought for the protection of birds, Mass Audubon carries on their legacy by focusing on the greatest challenges facing the environment today: the loss of biodiversity, inequitable access to nature, and climate change. With the help of our 160,000 members and supporters, we protect wildlife, conserve and restore resilient land, advocate for impactful environmental policies, offer nationally recognized education programs for adults and children, and provide endless opportunities to experience the outdoors at our wildlife sanctuaries.

Mass Audubon is seeking a part-time Volunteer Coordinator to assist with the administrative, logistical, and operational management of the Northeast Region's volunteer cohort. The Volunteer Coordinator works closely with the region's Operations Manager on a daily basis to manage volunteer onboarding, opportunity posting, hour entry, analysis, and reporting. This position also involves directly working with volunteers and members of the public, the Statewide Volunteer Coordinator, members of the region's Property and Education teams, and other internal Mass Audubon departments.

This is a heavily administrative-focused position with a focus on volunteer analysis, goal-setting, and best practices; onsite work with volunteer groups and individuals is also required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Recruit, screen, interview, and match volunteers with appropriate projects across the region
  • Collaborate with regional staff to support their volunteer needs in all departments, including the development of volunteer job descriptions and project needs for individuals and groups
  • Onboard new volunteers: field inquiries, onboard into the Volunteer Portal, disseminate training materials, provide volunteer name tags and other gear, and ensure that any additional paperwork (CORI, SORI, and driver background checks) is completed and kept up-to-date
  • Coordinate with businesses, community groups, and others interested in volunteering, including managing outreach, communication, and potential donations
  • Maintain data on volunteers, including schedules, hours, years of service, and general information, utilizing Mass Audubon's Volunteer Portal
  • Support volunteer recognition efforts and appreciation events
  • Coordinate communication and community building for the region's volunteers
  • Evaluate volunteer progress and satisfaction with their experiences
  • Participate in courses, workshops, and other events for professional development within and outside Mass Audubon
  • Enter hours for volunteers from Excel trackers and physical log books
  • Occasionally supervise onsite volunteers and volunteer groups
  • Work with Mass Audubon's Statewide Volunteer Program Manager: participate in monthly volunteer coordinator meetings, submit annual reports when required, request and communicate volunteer group needs, and coordinate participation in Mass Audubon's Statewide Volunteer Day
  • Work with the region's Operations Manager, Regional Director, and Statewide Volunteer Program Manager to set annual goals around volunteerism across the region

Qualifications include:

  • Associate's degree or 2+ years of relevant work experience in administrative or database/data entry roles
  • Prior experience working with volunteers or customer service experience in public-facing roles
  • Excellent organizational ability, particularly while multitasking
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • High level of aptitude with computers and software, particularly Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people while exhibiting cultural competency and inclusion

Compensation, Benefits and Perks This position's pay range is $24.50-$26.00/hour; actual rate of pay will reflect level of experience and qualifications relative to position requirements. This is a year-round position and earns vacation time as well as receives paid holidays.

Work Schedule This is a part-time, year-round position. Approximately 19 hours per week on Wednesdays and Thursdays; hours on other days will be scheduled based on operational need. Some evenings and weekends for volunteer events will be required with advance notice. Some regional travel will be required, up to 1 day per week, which will include mileage reimbursement and/or vehicle usage based on candidate's geographic location.

Other Requirements Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check and a Motor Vehicle Record (if applicable) is required.
