Under the supervision of the Volunteer and Education Program Manager, the Community Engagement Specialist supports the stewardship and engagement mission of Friends of the Blue Hills (FBH) year-round. Specifically, this position supports FBH outdoor programming. The Community Engagement Specialist develops and implements public programming and stewardship with a focus on engaging first-time visitors to the Blue Hills Reservation. Leveraging the unique natural resources of the Blue Hills Reservation, they will engage and inspire audiences to get outdoors, understand their connection to the land, deepen their appreciation of place, and foster a stewardship ethic.
EssentialFunctions
- Develop, market, and deliver quality programming in line with the FBH mission and goal of connecting more people with the park.
- Manage content development, logistics, and safety protocols while providing a valuable learning experience for families, children, and adults.
- Assist with recruitment and training of volunteers, special events, and program marketing and publicity.
- Manage program registration and data collection.
- Be able to summarize and document future project work that needs to be completed.
- Represent FBH in a variety of forums.
- Other duties as required.
The Community Engagement Specialist will collaborate with other staff to coordinate programs with on-going in-park activity to support our long-term property management, resource preservation, membership and fund-raising goals. The Community Engagement Specialist will function as a collaborative member of FBH staff and volunteers, helping to develop and grow an organization-wide recreation and outdoor education program.
Qualifications- A passion for outdoor recreation, environmental education, and connecting with people
- Ability to work independently
- Experience developing and conducting site-based educational or recreational programs.
- Background working within natural or recreational spaces, nature education, ecology, and conservation
- Experience developing place-based, play-based, experiential, inquiry-driven programs that draw on the unique identity with place and organizational mission
- Ability to complete assigned tasks and projects, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking
- A strong commitment to the FBH mission
- Commitment and personal passion for getting more people connected to the outdoors
- Comfortable taking initiative, managing programs independently, and adapting to changing conditions.
The applicant should be certified in first aid or be willing to acquire American Red Cross CPR/First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification within 1 month after hire. Paid for by Friends of the Blue Hills.
Job type and RequirementsThis is a part-time, year-round position averaging 10 hours per week, including one weekend day. The job may also require working evenings. Additional hours may be an option. The ideal candidate would be able to start no later than May 1, 2026.
Pay rate: $23–$28/hour, depending on experience.
- A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation required to travel between program sites and transport program materials
- Not a benefits-eligible position
- CORI and SORI check required
- Must be willing to work outside during all types of weather
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
