Legal Action of Wisconsin, Inc. is a non‑profit law firm that provides free civil legal aid to low‑income persons in Wisconsin. We are seeking to fill a full‑time Staff Accountant position.

Office Location

The Staff Accountant may be housed in either the Milwaukee office (633 West Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 2000) or the Wausau office (401 N. 5th Street, Suite 200). The Staff Accountant may request a hybrid work schedule under Legal Action’s Flex Work Policy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine accounting duties in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
  • Accounts Receivable:
    • Record daily financial transactions, verify, classify, and post account receivables, including grants and other receivables.
    • Reconcile the accounts receivable ledger and monitor grant revenue actual to budget, alerting the Director of Finance and the Controller of any material variances.
    • Review expenses by funding source and properly invoice funders for incurred expenses.
  • Accounts Payable:
    • Ensure all invoices submitted for payment are recorded accurately and coded to the proper grant, department, purpose, location, etc., and reconcile the accounts payable ledger.
  • Journal Entries and Account Reconciliation:
    • Make proper journal entries and maintain the general ledger.
    • Prepare reconciliations of balance sheet accounts.
    • Track and record all grant activity including revenues, expenses, accounts receivables and deferred revenue on grant reports.
    • Create financial statements in the accounting software for each grant, including reconciliation of revenue and expenses.
    • Prepare grant budgets for discussion and presentation to the organization’s management and funding sources.
    • Prepare funding source financial statements and client service reports to the oversight authority.
    • Assist with preparing accurate, timely financial statements, forecasts and projections of cash flow and other performance indicators.
    • Prepare grant, government, and service reports from the client database Legal Server and assist in tracking year‑to‑date expenses.
  • Compliance:
    • Spot errors and suggest ways for improving procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP standards.
  • Other:
    Perform additional duties related to the administration of the program.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field from an accredited university.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft programs.
  • Proficient and working knowledge of accounting software packages and payroll reporting.
  • Attention to detail and ability to check for accuracy of information.
  • Professional attitude, ability to handle confidential information ethically.
  • Analytical and problem‑solving skills; ability to make responsible decisions within policy limits.
  • Flexibility in work style and approach; effective team member; ability to set priorities and plan accordingly.
  • Commitment to working cooperatively and collegially with employees of varied backgrounds; commitment to improving diversity and inclusion.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Typical duties include sitting and/or standing at a desk while working at a computer for an extended period. The position may require lifting up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision due to computer work. Occasional reaching, bending, kneeling, and stooping may be required.

Salary

The salary scale has 36 steps, with Step 0 at $46,814. Step 2 ($49,415) and Step 5 ($53,316) are highlighted. Step 10 is $59,818;
Step 20 is $72,562;
Step 30 is $84,266;
Step 36 is $91,288. Employees advance one step on their anniversary date unless on a performance improvement plan.

Additional pay of $2,400 or $4,800 is available for employees fluent in Spanish or Hmong.

Flex Work Available

Under Legal Action’s Flex Work Policy, the Staff Accountant may request a hybrid work week (three days remote). The accounting team is on office Wednesdays and Thursdays. A condensed work week may also be considered.
