Gallery Assistant, UWM Union Art Gallery
The Union Art Gallery Gallery Assistant is responsible for welcoming guests into the gallery, providing assistance to guests during open hours, and providing installation and event support to the Union Art Gallery team, Managers, and the Manager for Arts Programming. This is a fast-paced position that averages 8-10 hours per week, and is paid hourly at $11/hour. It is ideal for a student interested in visual arts, community programming, education, art engagement, and/or working in the arts/creative industry more broadly.
This role reports directly to the Gallery Manager and Curator.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS- Strong customer service skills and/or experience in hospitality environments helpful in this role.
- Attention to detail and good organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Interest in learning about the arts broadly.
- Knowledge of gallery practices and art handling is helpful, and can also be taught in this role.
- Collaborate with Union Art Gallery team and the Manager for Arts Programming to create an impactful experience for all guests who come through the gallery.
- Assist with art installation and setup of special events and exhibitions, including but not limited to:
- Handling artwork in accordance with art handling training and best practices.
- Lighting exhibitions.
- Move and lift pedestals.
- Painting walls and pedestals.
- Package artworks appropriately for shipping.
- Maintain the gallery space and follow daily cleaning procedures.
- Assist in maintaining the art storage space.
- Work together as a team with staff.
- Conduct outreach (class visits, tabling, etc.) to various departments around campus to let them know about what we offer.
- Maintain regular working hours in the Union Art Gallery and contribute to a welcoming environment for all guests.
- Interact with guest artists and visitors and answer any questions they may have during their visit.
- Assist with creating Gallery Guides.
- Attend Union Art Gallery monthly staff meetings and monthly Student Involvement Communications meetings.
- Meet with Gallery Manager regularly.
- Provide some administrative support to Gallery Manager and Assistant Manager, including but not limited to:
- Receiving and passing along gallery inquiries from the public.
- Assist with special projects and support as directed.
- Additional support and projects as assigned and needed.
Current UW-Milwaukee student. Knowledge of gallery practices is desirable. This role is ideal for a student interested in visual arts, community programming, education, art engagement, and/or working in the arts/creative industry more broadly.
