Cutter​/Draper - Costume Shop

Position Overview

The Costume Shop’s Cutter/Draper assists in the day‑to‑day operations of the Theatre Arts costume shop and supervises all activities associated with the shop in consultation with the Costume Shop Manager. The Cutter/Draper supervises students in the costume shop and ensures their proper and safe use of associated machinery. The role includes producing patterns from costume renderings, sketches, and verbal instructions; supervising or performing patterning, construction, assembly, and fitting of costumes for departmental productions;

maintaining machine and equipment; and ensuring costumes maintain their appearance.

• Bachelor’s degree in Theatre with an emphasis in Technical Theatre.
• At least two years of practical work experience in the preparation and construction of theatre costumes.
• Supervisory skills.
• Ability to operate a sewing machine and perform basic sewing, patterning, draping, and clothing construction.
• Strong oral communication skills and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with individuals of other cultures or backgrounds.
• Visual acuity.
• Ability to lift and transport materials weighing up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis.
• Requires prolonged standing, frequent bending or stooping.

• Patterning and draping skills.
