Chief Medical Officer – RoleThe Chief Medical Officer is the chief administrative role of the Children’s Wisconsin medical staff. This role focuses on assuring that the delivery of patient care by the medical staff at the Milwaukee, Fox Valley and Surgicenter campuses is consistent with generally accepted performance standards and that care is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable and patient/family centered. In addition, this role ensures that the administrative and regulatory aspects of the medical staff are accomplished.
This position shares responsibility for resolving medical staff issues with the President of the Medical Staff, Pediatrician in Chief, Surgeon in Chief and the appropriate Associate Chief Medical Officers.
- A degree in Medicine, specifically Pediatrics or pediatric specialty and Board certification.
- Extensive experience working with physicians and hospital administrators.
- Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to present and speak publicly and negotiate with physicians, hospital administrators, and others.
- Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact in extremely delicate, sensitive and/or complex situations, plus a high degree of judgment, initiative, tact, and persuasiveness to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the position.
- Exhibits guiding behaviors that reflect Children’s values and support our mission and vision.
- Ensure Medical Staff compliance with appropriate regulatory standards.
- Recommend, implement, evaluate, and enforce hospital and medical staff policies and procedures relating to Medical Staff practices.
- Functions as a voting member of the Executive Committee of the respective Medical Staffs. May participate on other hospital and Medical Staff committees as requested.
- Attend the Quality Committee of the Board and Board of Directors meetings.
- Coordinate the establishment and maintenance of channels of communication among the Medical Staff and between the Medical Staff and the hospital administration. Serve as a physician representative and ombudsman to identify the day-to-day needs and concerns of the Medical Staff and work with Administration toward mutually acceptable problem resolution.
- Cultivate working relationships and develop collaborative relationships with system leaders to assure the operational efficiency and effectiveness of medical and patient care services, and to identify shared opportunities to promote excellence within Children’s Wisconsin.
- Partner with medical staff, leadership and care teams to implement new operating processes and systems to enhance patient flow, enhance quality, and facilitate clinical excellence.
- Provide oversight of Employee Health and Wellness nursing procedures for care of occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses (includes lab and vaccine protocols, medication orders, and general recommendations).
- Oversee provider wellbeing programs and provider staff.
- Assist administration in risk management affairs as they relate to the Medical Staff.
- Participate in patient care activities as appropriate for role, training, and privileges.
