Job Summary: The University of Wisconsin‑Milwaukee College of Health Professions and Sciences (CHPS) invites applications for a full‑time, probationary leading to indefinite Academic Advisor position. Applicants must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and relate well to a broad audience working toward a goal of attracting, admitting, and enrolling a talented, diverse student body. Advisors will have superb organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple responsibilities, excellent follow‑through, ability to work with a team and independently, and an aptitude for detail‑oriented tasks are essential.

Applicants are expected to have knowledge of academic advising best practices and student development theories. The Academic Advisor engages students in decision‑making processes, promotes responsible choices in academic matters such as course selection, degree requirements, and academic pathways, maintains confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. The Academic Advisor works to ensure students interested in nursing receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion, striving to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

All CHPS academic advisors participate in New Student Orientation and Panther Transition Experience. This position may involve on‑site work with a minimum of 3 business days per week on campus and occasionally supports programming during evenings and weekends.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community, providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college.
  • Proactively engages students as needed.
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum.
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records, processes and responds to academic inquiries according to institutional and FERPA policies.
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers.
  • Serves as a main point of contact for students, provides information about educational options and academic requirements, assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources.

Department Overview: The University of Wisconsin‑Milwaukee College of Health Professions & Sciences offers a wide array of health‑related academic programs in biomedical sciences, global health, health care administration, nursing, rehabilitation sciences, and sustainable peace building serving 2300+ students. Many of our degree programs are nationally recognized and ranked, and our faculty, staff, and students continue to break new ground in research that pioneers discoveries critical to the health care professions and sciences.

Compensation: Target range $55,000‑$60,000 per year. Final salary contingent upon skills, knowledge, and abilities demonstrated in selection.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (must be granted by date of hire).
  • 1‑2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Evidence of excellent written communication skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Development, or related field.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience in academic advising.
  • Experience working on a team to create, implement or deliver projects or programming.
  • Knowledge of academic advising software (e.g., Navigate
    360, Oracle People Soft, Slate, Stellic).
  • Experience with academic planning, career development, and/or retention initiatives.
