UCC School staff provide an educational atmosphere where students fulfill their potential. The School Counselor supports students’ academic, social-emotional, and college/career development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Social‑Emotional Learning & Mental Health Support
  • Design, implement, and facilitate school‑wide and classroom‑based SEL initiatives aligned to evidence‑based frameworks (e.g., CASEL).
  • Provide Tier1 SEL instruction ensuring all students receive consistent, developmentally appropriate instruction in self‑awareness, self‑management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision‑making.
  • Offer short‑term and long‑term individual and group counseling to students with social, emotional, or behavioral challenges, including crisis intervention for trauma, grief, or sudden distress.
  • Implement preventative mental health supports; respond to crises with timely, compassionate interventions and follow‑up.
  • Collaborate with school staff to integrate SEL into daily instruction and routines.
Student Support & Progress Monitoring
  • Actively participate in Student Support Teams (SST) – MTSS, IEP, 504, and behavior intervention teams.
  • Assist in the development, monitoring, and implementation of individualized student support plans.
  • Analyze academic, behavioral, attendance, and social‑emotional data to identify trends and recommend supports.
  • Guide decisions on tiered interventions, progress monitoring tools, and service adjustments.
Program Management & Scheduling
  • Develop and maintain a structured counseling schedule prioritizing Tier1 (core classroom lessons), Tier2 (targeted small groups), and Tier3 (individualized support).
  • Maximize the number of students served while balancing responsiveness and school priorities.
  • Share and review schedule with school administration to ensure alignment with goals and staffing.
Family Engagement & Support
  • Serve as liaison between school and families to promote strong home‑school partnerships.
  • Provide families with support and resources for academic, behavioral, or mental health concerns.
  • Organize and participate in family education workshops and community outreach events.
  • Communicate regularly about student progress, support strategies, and available resources.
Collaboration & Consultation
  • Work closely with teachers, administrators, student services personnel, and external service providers.
  • Consult staff in developing behavior strategies and classroom supports.
  • Facilitate communication among support teams to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional learning communities, and ongoing professional development.
  • Maintain effective, transparent communication with school administration.
Positive School Culture & Climate
  • Support an inclusive environment where every student feels safe, valued, and connected.
  • Promote positive leadership, character education, restorative practices, and wellness initiatives.
  • Contribute to behavior support planning and implementation of positive behavior interventions.
  • Serve as visible, approachable resource for students throughout the school day.
  • Maintain consistent school rules and behavior expectations, fostering respectful, responsible behavior.
Student Safety, Crisis Response, and Legal/Ethical Responsibilities
  • Act as mandated reporter; promptly identify and report suspected abuse or neglect to CPS per state law and district policy.
  • Communicate all CPS reports and concerns directly to school administration for alignment on next steps.
  • Maintain thorough, confidential documentation of reports, observations, and follow‑ups.
  • Uphold highest standards of ethical practice, confidentiality, and student advocacy.
  • Support school’s crisis response procedures, including safety planning and coordination with emergency services when needed.
Data Management & Documentation
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student records.
  • Collect and analyze data on service delivery, attendance, behavior, and academic outcomes.
