POSITION SUMMARY:

Carmen Southgate High School is seeking a dynamic, student-centered Phoenix Rising (Seminar 10) teacher who embodies our core values of Empathy, Growth, and Belief. The ideal candidate demonstrates compassion and understanding for students’ diverse experiences, is committed to continuous improvement in their practice, and holds an unwavering belief in every student’s potential to excel.

The Phoenix Rising teacher will facilitate Carmen’s daily 10th grade Seminar course, designed to ensure every student develops the habits, skills, and support systems needed to succeed in high school, college, career, and life. Through explicit instruction in executive functioning, study skills, goal setting, and self-advocacy, the teacher helps students build confidence, ownership, and resilience. This role combines skill-building, academic coaching, and relationship-centered support to create a proactive, Tier 1 experience for all students.

Grounded in Carmen’s core values of Empathy, Belief, and Growth, the Phoenix Rising teacher plays a critical role in helping students establish the foundation for long-term success.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Licensure issued by Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction (or eligibility for such licensure) in ALL subject areas to be taught
  • Successful teaching experience, urban school(s) preferred
  • Knowledge and skills in creating a learning environment that fosters college readiness and high student achievement
  • Ability to serve as an advisor to a small group of students
  • Ability to communicate effectively to achieve assigned duties and goals
  • Knowledge, skills, and ability in effective classroom management
  • Passion for quality education and student achievement
  • Ability to function in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment with a professional approach to challenges
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Execute meaningful and engaging learning experiences, interventions, enrichment, remediation, advising which have the academic rigor and success of a college-preparatory school, preparing students for college and meaningful careers.
  • Plan and facilitate engaging executive functioning mini-lessons focused on organization, time management, study skills, goal setting, self-advocacy, and other skills critical for success in high school and beyond.
  • Build and maintain systems that help students track assignments, assessments, grades, attendance, and progress across their courses.
  • Facilitate regular student reflection on academic performance, habits, and goals, helping students develop ownership of their learning.
  • Maintain a consistent schedule of individualized academic coaching and 1:1 check-ins with students.
  • Partner with grade-level teachers, interventionists, support staff, and caregivers to ensure students receive coordinated support.
  • Collaborate with school leaders and colleagues to continuously improve the Phoenix Rising experience and ensure alignment with Carmen’s vision for student success.
  • Hold themselves and their students to high standards for achievement and success academically, behaviorally, and socially.
  • Work with an Instructional Coach to continually improve one’s practice in a way that supports raising the achievement levels of traditionally underserved students.
  • Apply best practices in teaching and classroom management.
  • Commit to a culture which promotes learning, respect, trust, and responsibility.
  • Create trusting relationships with students and their families/guardians, involving parents in the student’s overall success.
