Position: 7th / 8th Grade Social Studies

Position Summary

The 7th/8th Social Studies Teacher is responsible for the daily programming for children enrolled in the School program. The role includes implementing and providing developmentally appropriate practices and high‑quality education according to the standards set forth by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP), and federal guidelines. The Teacher ensures that the needs of children and their families are understood and communicated as the primary SJA liaison.

Qualifications
  • BS Degree in Education with valid DPI Certification
  • 2+ years experience within early care working in an elementary school setting preferred
  • Exemplary interpersonal, collaborative, and planning skills
  • Interest and ability to support children and their families
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products and office equipment
  • Ability to analyze an issue, identify options, and implement solutions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with people in and outside of the Education Department
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing and effectively interact with children, their family members, management, and staff members
  • Ability to respond positively to work direction and guidance from others
  • Ability to work independently, managing multiple demanding tasks under critical time frames
Equipment Used

Office equipment: personal computers, printers, phone systems, fax machine, photocopier.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Must be able to sit 25% of the shift, walk/stand 75% of the shift, and remain in routine activities throughout the day. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. periodically. Must have functional senses/manual dexterity to carry out the job, communicate effectively, and use office equipment. Must be able to manage the stress of emergency/critical situations and multiple tasks.

Environmental

Conditions

Performs duties with exposure to infectious or communicable diseases inherent to caring for children, and occasional exposure to loud or unpleasant voices due to unpredictable behavior. Seasonal exposure to high humidity, heat, and cold due to the internal and external environment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensures consistent compliance with all accreditation and DPI standards.
  • Plans and executes teaching practices that reflect the developmentally appropriate curriculum for children.
  • Maintains classroom environment in compliance with DPI guidelines and accreditation standards; cleans, organizes, and refreshes learning centers, displays, and bulletin boards.
  • Cleans, sanitizes, repairs, stores, and organizes educational materials and toys to optimize child safety and use.
  • Maintains well‑designed, child‑focused bulletin boards reflecting children’s work and interests.
  • Develops and implements lesson plans in accordance with program Academic Standards, SJA philosophy, and policies.
  • Supplies supervision of assigned children at all times, remains alert to signs of illness or stress, and informs the Principal of any developmental delays.
  • Ensures each family’s right to information about their child’s progress while maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
  • Extends excellent service to all children and families.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing all pertinent information to assist in family satisfaction.
  • Establishes appropriate relationships with children, parents/guardians, staff, and the public to ensure a safe environment that protects the rights of children, families, and staff.
  • Fosters an environment that allows children, their families, and staff to develop to their fullest potential.
  • Cultivates positive relationships with children, parents, and families.
  • Assists children and parents in orienting to and making a smooth transition into the school program.
  • Solicits information from families about their cultural background and interests.
  • Maintains day‑to‑day communication with parents, including interpretation and follow‑through of the SJA philosophy and policies.
