OverviewUnder the direction of the Dean, Creative Arts, Design & Media, the Instructor develops and teaches concepts and strategies for a variety of courses. Teaching may occur at MATC campuses, business, community, other sites, and online during the day, evening, and/or weekend. Duties include participation in department and advisory meetings, course and curriculum development, staff development, open labs, student advising, outcome assessment, recruitment and retention of students, and other related duties.
The instructor must keep current with the latest trends and technologies in the discipline.
- Prepare and deliver engaging instruction in accordance with established curriculum guidelines.
- Manage classroom/laboratory environments to ensure a conducive learning atmosphere.
- Develop, monitor, and revise curriculum to maintain course effectiveness and relevance.
- Manage equipment, supplies, and materials necessary for instructional activities.
- Assess student performance and provide constructive feedback to support academic growth.
- Advis e students on academic matters and provide guidance.
- Collaborate with advisory committees, colleagues, and industry partners to enhance program effectiveness.
- Attend departmental and institutional meetings to contribute to academic planning and decision‑making.
- Promote educational programs, participate in student recruitment efforts, and support initiatives to retain students.
- Support student organizations and activities to enrich their educational experience.
- Develop and maintain relationships with business and industry partners to facilitate student opportunities and program growth.
- Complete program evaluations, engage in continuous professional development, and stay current in the field.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Educational requirements: Associate Degree (AAS/AA) or higher in Culinary, Baking, Hospitality. {Per Higher Learning Commission Determining Qualified Faculty Assumed Practice
B.2.} - Occupational experience: Minimum seven (7) years (14,000 hours) as a Chef, Pastry Chef, or Manager in hospitality. Additionally, at least one of the following must be met:
- At least one (1) year of experience within the last five (5) years
- Two (2) years teaching Baking, Pastry, or Savory Food preparation at post‑secondary level within the last five years
- Industry or vendor certification: Serv Safe certification from National Restaurant Association with a minimum 90 % passing score.
- Essential technology: Experience with an email system (Gmail, Outlook), telephone, voicemail system, and computer. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or Google Workspace.
- Essential supportive technology: Willingness to learn or experience with online information management systems (INFOnline or similar), Blackboard or other web‑based course‑management systems, technology‑based instructional delivery systems (SMART boards, touch‑screen monitors, LCD projectors, DVD players), and emerging technologies (e.g., social networking applications).
- Standards of Teaching Excellence: Understanding Students and Fostering Student Success, Classroom Management, Planning/Organization, Content Mastery and Currency, Teaching Methodology, and Assessment of Student Learning;
Professional Contributions.
Salary – Starting hourly wage for all part‑time faculty is $40 per course hour of teaching. Part‑time faculty are also compensated for an additional 45 minutes of time for each hour of instruction to cover office hours and prep time, equivalent to $70 per hour.
