Academic Advisor

The Division of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success is searching for Academic Advisors to fill key roles in several Schools and Colleges within UWM. Finalists will be selected based on their skills and experience, as well as the best fit for a particular school or college within the University.

Current vacancies include the School of Arts & Architecture, College of Engineering and Applied Science, First Year Bridge, and the Lubar College of Business.

This is a full-time, renewable 12-month academic staff position. There may be the ability to work remotely at times (as determined by supervisor), upon successful completion of a standardized Academic Advisor training program.

Academic Advisor engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion.

Job Responsibilities
  • Work within a distributed campus advising system, assisting students in an assigned school, college, or major; develop and deliver curricular expertise within a localized advising context while maintaining a holistic and student-centric approach to delivery of support and guidance.
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • Proactively engages students as needed
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
UWM Advising Specifics
  • Demonstrate relational and developmental student-centered advising that assist the whole student in prior student success, persistence, and progress towards educational goals.
  • Develop expertise in specific, position-related curricula and student supports or opportunities
  • Regularly consult with senior advisors or supervisors on student issues
Professional Involvement

Expected to participate in New Advisor Onboarding. Attend a minimum of four meetings annually of the Advisors & Coaches Network

Compensation: $50,000-$56,000

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher.
  • At least one (1) year of professional work or internship/practicum experience in higher education working directly with students
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or higher
  • At least one (1) year of experience advising students in a college/university setting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by written application materials and interviews (where applicable)
  • Experience building positive relationships with diverse populations.
  • Prior experience in higher education, particularly in areas related to Art & Architecture, Business, or Engineering
