Academic Advisor I/II
Job SummaryAcademic Advisor I/II is a regular, academic staff position within the College of Community Engagement and Professions (CCEP) at the University of Wisconsin‑Milwaukee. The role provides wrap‑around student services to support enrollment, retention, and graduation goals across undergraduate, graduate, certificate, second‑degree, post‑baccalaureate, and teacher‑certification programs.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as the main point of contact for students regarding educational, course, and degree options and academic requirements.
- Assist students in identifying interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field or career options and refer to institutional resources.
- Receive, process, and respond to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures.
- Work with undergraduate, graduate, post‑baccalaureate, and teacher‑certification students in the College of Community Engagement and Professions.
- Develop expertise in specific curricula and student supports or opportunities.
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate student records in accordance with FERPA policies.
- Proactively engage students as needed and consult with other advisors and program directors on student issues.
- Assist in developing and recommending policy exceptions when appropriate.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- At least one year of professional academic advising experience in higher education.
- Master’s degree or higher.
- Experience advising graduate students.
- Three or more years of advising experience at UWM or a similar institution.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Experience building positive relationships with diverse populations.
- Prior experience in higher education, particularly in Education, Teacher Licensure, Social Work, or Criminal Justice.
$55,000 – $65,000 annually, depending on level.
