Position: Volunteer ESL Tutor for Refugee Youth (K-12)

Overview

SEA Literacy (SEAL) provides year-round ESL lessons, homework tutoring, and recreational activities to refugee youth in Milwaukee from kindergarten through college. We meet on Tuesday evenings 6-8 pm and Saturdays 10 am–12 pm, and we also go on field trips and have special events throughout the year. Children attend by choice to learn English, excel in school, and meet peers.

Volunteer Role

As a volunteer you will help students read, learn and speak English, play games, work on STEM or art projects, and assist with homework. If you have a skill you can teach (e.g., chess, knitting), we would love to work with you.

Why Volunteer with Us
  • Impact: empower students to improve language skills and academic success.
  • Community building: join a community of volunteers passionate about education.
  • Flexible commitment: two sessions weekly to fit your schedule.
  • Personal growth: enhance teaching, mentoring, and communication skills while making a positive impact.
Responsibilities
  • Provide ESL tutoring to students at various levels.
  • Assist with homework assignments and projects.
  • Foster a positive and encouraging learning environment.
  • Adapt to the unique needs of each student.
  • Share your knowledge and passion for learning.
Requirements
  • Proficiency in English.
  • Patience, empathy, and a passion for helping others.

We have sessions on Tuesdays 6-8 pm and Saturdays 10 am-noon. We encourage volunteers of all ages to help. Our students range from kindergarten through college. You don t need to have any special training to help these wonderful students; they are learning and practicing English and appreciate the help.

This is an optional program for our students; they attend because they want to improve and succeed in the classroom, make new friends, and understand our culture.

Our program meets on Tuesdays 6:00-8:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 am-noon. You can choose which day you would like to volunteer or volunteer on both days.
