Responsible for advising, counseling, and monitoring for the academic progress and eligibility of student-athletes. This includes managing academic records and preparing bi-annual academic progress reports and summaries. This role also assists in the implementation of the NCAA Student Affairs programming to meet student-athletes’ needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- 1. Provide academic advisement to an assigned group of identified student-athletes from various sports, including those identified as “at-risk”.
- 2. Develop, implement, and monitor the implementation of individualized evidence-based academic support plan for identified student-athletes.
- 3. Assess and evaluate the academic needs and prescribe additional academic assistance as needed.
- 4. Prepare regular academic reports for coaching staff and various administrators regarding the academic progress of assigned student-athletes.
- 5. Meet with prospective student-athletes to discuss the college’s philosophy as it regards student-athletes and the support programs offered at Marquette University.
- 6. Organize activities related to freshmen orientation, summer bridge program, and other programs as assigned by the Executive Athletic Director for Academics.
- 7. Monitor and supervise academic progress of assigned student-athletes through one to one meetings, coordination of support services and academic updates from professors.
- 8. Address learning techniques such as note taking and test preparation.
- 9. Conduct annual audit of academic progress relative to NCAA , Big East, and University requirements.
- 10. Supervise tutors (professional and student) that work with assigned student-athletes.
Required Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in special education, counseling, higher education, education, student development, athletic administration or related field.
One to three years of experience in athletic academic counseling or related experience. 2-5 years of experience working in the college academic setting. Familiarity with college academic environment at an advising/teaching level is a minimum starting point for work with students in the academic center.
