Test Technician – High Voltage / Transformer Testing About the Role
We’re seeking a Test Technician to support electrical testing and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for large power transformers. This role involves hands-on electrical testing, control wiring verification, and assisting with high‑voltage and dielectric test operations. If you have a strong electrical foundation and want to build advanced skills in high‑voltage equipment testing, this is an excellent fit.
What You’ll Do- Perform control wiring checks and verify operation of fans, LTCs, sensors, and monitoring systems
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and test procedures
- Conduct low/medium‑voltage electrical tests (ratio, resistance, capacitance, Hipot, Doble, CT testing)
- Assist with setup and teardown of transformers and test equipment
- Support high‑voltage tests (Lightning Impulse, Switching Impulse, Applied Voltage, Induced Over‑Voltage, Partial Discharge)
- Document test data, investigate nonconforming results, and ensure proper handling of defective components
- Follow all high‑voltage safety protocols including NFPA
70E, Lockout-Tagout (LOTO), and fall‑protection procedures
- Strong understanding of electrical theory and three‑phase power
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Experience using electrical test instruments (multimeters, oscilloscopes, HV test equipment)
- Hands‑on troubleshooting skills
- High attention to detail and accurate documentation habits
- Comfort working in a manufacturing/test‑floor environment with strict safety requirements
- Transformer, switch gear, substation, or utility equipment background
- Experience with PLCs or instrumentation
- Field commissioning or FAT experience
You qualify with ANY of the following:
- Associate degree in Electrical/Power/High Voltage/Utilities Engineering or related field
- OR 2+ years of transformer FAT testing or field commissioning
- OR Journeyman/Master Electrician with relevant high‑voltage or utility experience
- OR 2–4 year degree (any discipline) + 2+ years technical experience in testing, field service, or electrical manufacturing
- Opportunity to grow into advanced high‑voltage testing
- Hands‑on work with large electrical power equipment
- Strong technical development and career progression
