Job Title:

Project Engineer – Electronics Job Description

The Project Engineer – Electronics designs, maintains, and improves electronic circuit board assemblies for industrial controllers, with a focus on mixed‑signal, microcontroller‑based systems, power conversion, and radio frequency applications. This role develops and applies best practices in PCB design and assembly, ensures compliance with industry and regulatory standards, and supports production and product lifecycle activities, including component obsolescence and vendor changes.

The position is highly technical and hands‑on, requiring deep expertise in board layout, EMC performance, and industrial control electronics.

Responsibilities
  • Develop electronic circuit board assembly designs that meet defined electrical and mechanical requirements, including compliance with third‑party certifications and relevant industry standards.
  • Create mixed‑signal, microcontroller‑based controllers, power converters, and radio frequency circuit board layouts of moderately broad scope.
  • Develop and maintain department subject matter expertise and best practices in circuit board design and assembly technologies.
  • Participate in electronics hardware design peer reviews, providing technical feedback and recommendations.
  • Maintain and update production drawings and data for all electronic circuit board assemblies to ensure accurate and current documentation.
  • Maintain and manage the database of electronic components and circuit board footprints, including approved vendor part numbers.
  • Use and refine circuit board assembly design best practices, including risk assessment, design for environment, and design for manufacturing and serviceability.
  • Maintain electronic circuit board design files and drawings to support new product design projects and existing product updates.
  • Analyze and resolve vendor component change notifications and obsolescence issues, ensuring continuity of supply and product performance.
  • Work in cross‑functional team environments to analyze and mitigate component change and obsolescence risks across product lines.
  • Use standard electronics laboratory tools such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and digital multimeters to analyze, debug, and document the operation of electronic circuits and systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve electronic circuit board assembly production issues in collaboration with manufacturing, quality, and other engineering teams.
  • Meet with vendors and internal customers to discuss, document, and resolve technical issues related to electronic circuit board assemblies.
  • Optimize board layouts and designs to improve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) performance and meet regulatory and design requirements.
  • Lay out high‑speed memory buses in controlled impedance designs to meet timing tolerances for high‑speed microprocessors and memory devices.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes, tools, and standards for PCB layout and industrial control electronics.
  • Support future project management activities related to mitigating part obsolescence and warranty reduction projects as career progression within the job family.
Essential Skills
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • 4+ years of experience designing circuit boards for industrial controllers that meet FCC, UL, CSA, and CE requirements, including standards such as UL6200, UL1010, and UL2200.
  • Strong experience with circuit board layout and design for industrial control applications.
  • Hands‑on experience with electronic components, board layout, and circuit board assemblies.
  • Proficiency in designing mixed‑signal, microcontroller‑based controllers, power converters, and radio frequency circuits.
  • Demonstrated ability to design circuit boards that meet EMC and regulatory requirements, including FCC and CE.
  • Experience maintaining production drawings and data for electronic circuit board assemblies.
  • Ability to use standard electronics laboratory tools, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and digital multimeters, for analysis and debugging.
  • Strong abstract reasoning and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to document the problem‑solving process and the…
