The Compliance Engineer is responsible for managing UL certifications, regulatory compliance, and building code requirements to ensure alignment with applicable standards and evolve product designs. This role serves as a technical authority and primary liaison between engineering, manufacturing, and external agencies (e.g., UL, AHJs, TPIA), supporting new product development, customization, and project execution across diverse markets.
Product & Regulatory Compliance- Ensure products and systems comply with applicable standards and codes (UL, CSA, IEC, IEEE, NFPA, NEC, IBC, and international directives)
- Interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into engineering, manufacturing, and design specifications
- Evaluate design changes and configurations for compliance impact and certification requirements
- Serve as the internal subject matter expert on UL standards and certification strategy
- Determine applicability of existing listings and need for new certifications, investigations, or expansions
- Act as primary technical contact for UL, third-party agencies, and AHJs; coordinate permitting and jurisdictional compliance and resolve inspection issues
- Coordinate testing (type, routine, witness) and manage certification and approval documentation
- Maintain certification files and support audits, follow-up services, and nonconformance resolution
- Support compliance inspections with TPIAs, including special testing activities such as air leak and smoke tests
- Review designs, BOMs, layouts, and key system elements (e.g., grounding, fire protection) for compliance
- Provide guidance to engineering and manufacturing on standards interpretation and compliance solutions
- Participate in design reviews and risk assessments (DFMEA/PFMEA) to identify and mitigate compliance risks
- Support engineering in the development and review of civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical datasets to ensure compliance with applicable formatting and regulatory requirements
- Maintain compliance documentation (files, certifications, plans sets, QA manuals, test reports, procedures, and required documentation for compliance)
- Maintain change management processes (ECN/ECR)
- Develop standard guidelines, playbooks, and lessons learned to support consistent compliance execution
- Manage certification labels and ensure proper application and usage in accordance with compliance requirements
- Provide training to cross-functional teams on regulatory standards, codes, and compliance processes
- Monitor regulatory changes and drive improvements for certification, as well as risk and cost reduction
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Required- Strong knowledge of UL certification processes, product compliance strategies, and applicable codes/standards (e.g., NEC, IBC, NFPA)
- Ability to interpret and apply technical standards, regulatory requirements, drawings, and specifications
- Ability to apply compliance requirements to engineered systems and products
- Strong communication skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams, certification bodies, AHJs, and TPIAs
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation, compliance review, and change management
- Knowledge of UL standards (e.g., UL 1558, UL 891, UL50E, UL67) and IBC/IEC standards
- Skill in coordinating with certification organizations (e.g., UL, CSA, TPIA)
- Knowledge of manufacturing quality systems (e.g., ISO 9001)
- Ability to review electrical schematics, mechanical layouts, and technical documentation for compliance
- Ability to balance product innovation and customization with standardization and regulatory requirements
Technical degree in an engineering-related field and a minimum of 5–7 years of experience in a manufacturing or construction environment is required. 1–2 years of experience supporting UL certification processes and energy code compliance activities is required.

Employee uses computer keyboards often.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee views computer monitor often.
