Position Overview
The Mechanical CAD Designer will provide design, draft support, and direction, both within and outside the engineering function, to ensure the production of consistently high‑quality 3D modelling and 2D orthographic drawings within the required time frames dictated by the business demands.
Responsibilities- Create the foundation of a design from a "blank sheet" to develop the initial design concept and layout.
- Assist Sales and Proposals with the initial design prior to tender.
- Collaborate with Mechanical & Electrical Engineers to develop generic design concepts and verify correct design detail using CAD tools.
- Produce 3D modelled parts in AutoCAD for all entities necessary to fully populate the design in 3D.
- Develop the general arrangements from a tender into a full suite of design deliverables, including process & instrumentation diagrams, general layouts (plan, elevation, isometric), detailed fabrication drawings of pipe supports and equipment skids, and equipment lists.
- Liaise with relevant personnel within engineering and other functions on all project aspects, coordinate with subcontractors and site engineers during installation phases.
- Attend site to undertake surveys, capture project data, and conduct as‑built installation surveys to amend construction‑issued deliverables.
- Maintain AutoCAD functionality, including fault finding and setting up of drafting systems.
- Develop and maintain a library of generic component designs to reduce repetition and design time.
- Assist and guide less experienced and apprentice designers, providing training and support.
- Contribute to training and development initiatives for the design section.
- Help meet section key performance indicators as required by the business.
- Ensure full adherence to Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality management policies, CDM and procedures in all work undertaken.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in designing and detailing piping installations within industry settings.
- Experience and understanding of similar products, processes and applications.
- Associate Degree of Applied Science in Computer‑Aided Design Technology or similar, or extensive industry experience.
- Expertise with AutoCAD Plant 3D (2009+), AutoCAD P&, and Autodesk Navis Review 2010.
- Good IT skills – Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Knowledge of 3D solid modelling.
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
