Job Summary
The Senior Power Magnetics Engineer is responsible for the design, development, analysis, and validation of magnetic components for advanced power electronic systems. This role leads the design of transformers, inductors, chokes, current sensors, and other magnetic devices used in AC/DC, DC/DC, and high-frequency power conversion applications. The engineer works closely with power electronics, mechanical, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to optimize performance, efficiency, thermal management, manufacturability, and reliability from concept through production.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop custom magnetic components, including transformers, inductors, common-mode chokes, coupled inductors, and current transformers for power conversion systems.
- Perform magnetic, electrical, thermal, and mechanical analyses to optimize efficiency, power density, EMI performance, and reliability.
- Select appropriate magnetic core materials, winding configurations, insulation systems, and conductor technologies based on application requirements.
- Develop high-frequency magnetics for isolated and non-isolated AC/DC and DC/DC converters.
- Utilize finite element analysis (FEA) and electromagnetic simulation tools to model magnetic flux, core losses, leakage inductance, saturation, and thermal behavior.
- Collaborate with power electronics engineers to optimize converter topologies, switching frequencies, and magnetic component performance.
- Develop prototype magnetic assemblies and oversee laboratory testing and validation.
- Define test procedures and evaluate magnetic performance, including inductance, impedance, efficiency, core loss, temperature rise, and EMI characteristics.
- Conduct design reviews, root cause analysis, and corrective actions for product and manufacturing issues.
- Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Reliability (DFR) initiatives.
- Work with suppliers to qualify magnetic materials, cores, bobbins, wire, and insulation systems.
- Prepare engineering documentation, including specifications, calculations, drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and test reports.
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on magnetics design best practices.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) activities through production launch and continuous improvement efforts.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Electromagnetics, or a related engineering discipline;
