A. O. Smith seeks a Product Engineer to develop and enhance residential and commercial water heating products in a performance-driven, safety-focused manufacturing environment. In this role, you will design for manufacturability and reliability, perform thermal and structural analysis, and lead validation testing to improve efficiency and durability. You'll collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and marketing, maintain detailed engineering documentation, and drive continuous improvement and cost reduction.

Responsibilities
- Design and develop residential and commercial water heating products for manufacturability and performance
- Perform engineering analysis, modeling, and testing to improve energy efficiency and reliability
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams in manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and marketing on new product introductions
- Create and maintain engineering documentation, drawings, and specifications
- Support product validation, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives on existing products
- Ensure designs meet safety, regulatory, and industry standards for water heating and treatment equipment
- Use structured problem-solving and data analysis to address field issues and drive design changes
- Participate in design reviews, DFMEA, and risk assessments throughout the product lifecycle
- Coordinate with suppliers on component specifications and cost-effective, high-quality solutions
- Contribute to innovation efforts in advanced materials, controls, and energy-efficient technologies
Required Skills
- Mechanical design (3
- D CAD such as Solid
- Works, Creo, or Inventor)
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and thermal/fluid analysis
- Product validation and reliability testing
- DFMEA and design for manufacturability (DFM/DFA)
- Engineering documentation and CAD drawing standards (GD&T)
- Root-cause analysis and structured problem solving (8
- D, DMAIC)
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes (sheet metal, welding, casting, molding)
- Familiarity with ASME/UL and safety/regulatory standards
- Data analysis using Excel, Minitab, or similar tools
- Project coordination and cross-functional collaboration
