Responsibilities
  • Answers emergency and non‑emergency calls; evaluates emergency; enters information; determines appropriate response level, priority and type of resources required; dispatches police, fire, and medical personnel and equipment; updates and monitors event information.
  • Monitors radio traffic and requests for services, relays information and/or instructions to personnel, works with other agencies and coordinates mutual response radio traffic.
  • Maintains records of calls for service using the computer aided dispatch system; maintains and accesses building and premises history files for emergency and other necessary contacts.
  • Processes and enters instances into the records management system and performs related clerical duties.
  • Operates in‑house and radio paging systems; monitors closed‑circuit security cameras, security and fire alarm systems and all other lifesaving systems.
  • Assists students, staff and visitors and coordinates responses to after‑hour emergency calls for public safety services.
  • Presents campus dispatch trainings and procedures of services to new officers.
  • May be required to provide court testimony in writing, in person or in video.
  • Performs other related duties as required for the efficient operations of the division.

High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Preferred Education

Preferred Education: College coursework related to dispatching.

Required Experience

Required Experience: Two (2) years of experience in public safety and/or police or fire dispatching in a protection services or 911 center and two (2) years of experience involving public contact while performing multiple tasks and using computers.

Preferred Experience

Preferred Experience: More than two (2) years of relevant experience.

Specialty Skills
  • Knowledge of Community resources.
  • Knowledge of cities (Mequon, West Allis, Oak Creek) and campus surrounding geography.
  • Ability to complete the 40‑hour POST Public Safety dispatch Certification course completed by end of probationary period.
  • Subject to a criminal background and driving record check; a physical exam and an assessment of professional skills and a review of past employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, computers, and software applications.
  • Must have the ability to interpret and apply techniques, procedures and methods used in the operation of communications equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and apply codes, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret street maps; communicate emergency situations; transcribe information obtained over the telephone or radio into computer dispatch system; react quickly and accurately in emergency situations; listen and talk while at the same time performing various additional tasks.
  • Perform duties effectively under pressure; make decisions and use independent judgments; monitor a variety of emergency situations at the same time.
  • Ability to write basic letters, memos, and reports; perform routine clerical duties using the computer and software applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
