- Ensure specimens are properly accessioned, labeled, and suitable for testing
- Cut quality tissue sections at proper thickness and place them on glass slides
- Embed tissue into paraffin blocks
- Maintain filing systems for paraffin tissue blocks, slides, and wet tissue
- Process tissue using processors for preservation and paraffin infiltration
- Perform routine and special stains, immunohistochemistry, cover slipping, verification, and slide distribution
- Retrieve and print computer logs
- Manage daily workflow for recuts, special stains, immunohistochemistry, control slides, and send-outs according to established protocols
- Perform and document quality control; evaluate results and take corrective action under guidance
- Perform and document cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instruments and equipment
- Assist pathologists during frozen section procedures
- Ensure compliance with accrediting agency standards
- Provide assistance to pathologists, externs, and other team members
- May perform other related duties
- May require travel
- Histotechnician (HT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC)
- Advanced training beyond High School that includes completion of an accredited or approved program in Biology or related field
- No experience required
- Knowledge of human anatomy
- Detail oriented with good organizational and communication skills
- Ability to safely handle sharp instruments
- Proficient computer skills
- Problem-solving ability
- Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner
- Good manual dexterity
- Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job
- Ability to meet physical requirements, including lifting up to 50 lbs. occasionally
- Ability to wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns, and eye and face protection as needed
Demonstrates expertise in histotechnology, including specimen accessioning, tissue processing, and quality control. Proficient in immunohistochemistry and maintaining compliance with accrediting agency standards.
