Position Title:

Network Architect – Milwaukee-based hybrid

Location:

Milwaukee, WI (hybrid; requires on-campus presence periodically).

Employment Status:
Full time, Regular, Staff.

Hours per week: 37.5.

The Network Architect is responsible for designing, deploying, and optimizing enterprise‑level network solutions using wired and wireless hardware, software, and protocols. The role collaborates with stakeholders to align network infrastructure with business objectives, ensuring scalability, security, and performance. The Network Architect provides technical leadership, maintains documentation, and stays updated on emerging networking technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and develop architecture and configuration standards for network equipment across a large campus environment, including backbone routing, switching, edge configuration, Internet services, and wireless.
  • Implement network‑level requirements for zero‑trust architecture in collaboration with the IT Services security team, ensuring policy compliance and incident response.
  • Analyze network performance metrics to inform strategic decisions, drive continuous improvement, and optimize security, availability, and performance.
  • Collaborate with project managers, system administrators, and engineers on long‑term and short‑term networking strategies and technology integrations.
  • Lead configuration and installation of network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPNs, and QoS.
  • Participate in after‑hours on‑call rotation and triage campus wireless and wired network tickets.
  • Demonstrate strong problem‑solving, communication, and leadership abilities, explaining complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Required Knowledge,

    Skills and Abilities
    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
    • Recognized certification in designing or managing complex wired and wireless networks.
    • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience.
    • Ability to commute to campus within 1 hour as part of an on‑call rotation.
    • Experience managing large network infrastructure, including wired and wireless technologies.
    • Experience driving network topology changes to meet security requirements.
    • Experience implementing identity‑based network access control and policy enforcement.
    • Experience designing Wi‑Fi AP placement for high‑capacity spaces.
    • Hands‑on experience managing datacenter switches and services such as DHCP and DNS.
    • Experience troubleshooting network issues with telecom providers.
    • Strong problem‑solving, communication, and leadership skills.
    Preferred Knowledge,

    Skills and Abilities
    • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) – Enterprise Infrastructure or Security, Cisco Dev Net Associate, or Cisco Certified Architect.
    • Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) – Enterprise or Security, or 6+ years of large enterprise Cisco‑based network management experience.
    • Experience with VPNs, firewalls (preferably Fortinet Fortigate).
    • Experience writing, troubleshooting, and maintaining automation scripts.
    • Experience with VOIP technologies and voice routing.
    • Experience optimizing Cisco Catalyst Center Network Management (formerly DNAC).
    • Experience performing wireless network surveys and designs using Ekahau.
    • Strong Cisco background with ISE experience.
