Job Overview
Medical Interpreter III – Children’s Wisconsin. Provide interpreting services for patients and families in medical, community, and emergency settings to facilitate communication between healthcare staff and non‑English speaking individuals or authorized representatives.
Responsibilities- Facilitate complex communication between staff and patients, parents, or guardians in medical or community settings.
- Interpret at medical appointments, meetings, examinations, treatment, and therapy sessions, including complex situations.
- Provide sight translation of medical and social/health care documents.
- Translate, proofread, edit, and prepare final versions of written materials in the electronic health record or MS Word.
- Attend in‑services, educational meetings, committees, task forces, and special projects.
- Assist with scheduling, audits, and special projects during downtime.
- Use MS Office, Outlook, Excel, iPad and the electronic health record (Epic).
- Maintain excellent customer service, communication, and listening skills.
- Organize and prioritize tasks, and multi‑task to serve more than one patient/family concurrently.
- Shift between simultaneous and consecutive modes of interpreting as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting, Language Acquisition, Health Professional Language studies, or related area preferred; high school graduate or GED required.
- Current or completion within 6 months of a medical interpreting course covering ethics, terminology, or proven linguistic abilities.
- Pass oral and written proficiency tests with an overall score of at least 80%.
- Solid knowledge of medical terminology and familiarity with the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) code of ethics.
- Bilingual proficiency in both native and target languages (Spanish), with the ability to break linguistic and cultural barriers.
- Computer proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, Excel, iPad, and Epic.
- Certification: CCHI‑Certified Healthcare Interpreter or CMI‑Certified Medical Interpreter (within 2 years).
- For Interpreter II level: at least 2 years of interpreter experience in a medical setting; in‑house contractors with at least 1 year may qualify after the full rotation (≈12months).
Part‑time FTE 0.5 (≈20hours/week).
Schedule:
- Tuesdays: 8:30am–5:00pm at Forest Home Clinic
- Wednesdays: 8:30am–5:00pm at Milwaukee Main Campus
- Every other Saturday: 4:30pm–1:00am at Milwaukee Main Campus
- Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) – within 2years
- National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (CMI) – within 2years
