Quality Technician
Job Purpose And Reporting Structure:
Under the limited supervision of the Production Supervisor, the Quality Technician inspects raw materials and finished products, requiring close tolerances, at various stages of the production process; compiles test data to determine reason for deviation from quality standards.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
- Interpret instructions, blueprints, work orders, and routing sheets to determine specification requirements.
- Modify inspection procedures and techniques as needed.
- Determine equipment and tools needed for inspection. Visually inspects or checks parts using a variety of precision measuring instruments or against fixed samples. Test products for a variety of qualities such as size, dimensions, color, contour, finish, hardness, density, surface characteristics, gear geometry features or other measurable or observable characteristics of material. Performs diversified bench or floor inspection of a variety of standard or custom parts, products, or materials that are being produced in-house or received from vendors.
This includes inspection of first piece, in process, purchase parts and finished pieces. - Uses a variety of precision measuring instruments, including electronic devices. Loads parts and operates inspection equipment (i.e. CNC gear checking equipment, CMM, MPI, etc.)
- Performs detailed first article inspections following the installation of new or revised molds and dies.
- Record test data and prepare inspection reports as necessary.
- Evaluate data and may recommend, write, or modify sampling and inspections procedures and reports to validate or indicate deviations from existing standards.
- May use statistical tools to chart variance.
- Route product for additional operations.
- Communicate with Shop Supervisor, Engineering or Quality Control leadership on noted deviations of quality.
- Set up gages used in tests. Calibrate and maintain gaging devices.
- Guide assisting personnel on inspection processes and equipment.
- May perform finishing operations to correct rejected parts or assist with other production activities.
- Follow all clean up and housekeeping procedures.
Qualification Requirements:
- Requires high school level math including metrics and problem-solving skills and equivalent work experience of three to five years of related inspection experience in a machine shop.
- Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, decimals, and percent.
- Requires the ability to read specifications and gauges; ability to complete standard production documentation.
- Requires ability to operator a forklift truck
- Requires the ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
