Position/Title/Fund:
Climate Change Specialist

This newly created position is intended to lead the development and implementation of all aspects related to climate change and energy within the tribal community. The Climate Change Specialist will be responsible for securing grant funding, developing policies, educating the community about climate-related issues, and engaging all tribal departments in climate and energy initiatives. The role involves active participation in projects, meetings, and consultation opportunities, integrating traditional ecological knowledge and scientific best practices to support tribal sustainability and resilience.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of tribal climate change and energy strategies.
  • Conduct assessments of climate risks, vulnerabilities, and impacts on tribal lands, resources, and communities.
  • Engage with the community regarding climate and energy-related topics, projects, and issues.
  • Collaborate with other tribal departments to ensure climate and energy considerations are addressed early and throughout projects.
  • Develop or co-develop policies, procedures, and foundational documents, including strategic energy plans, feasibility studies, and climate action plans.
  • Apply for and secure funding to maintain and strengthen tribal capacity, programs, and sovereignty.
  • Complete reports, present findings to Tribal Council, educate the community, and advance tribal climate and energy goals.
  • Track and report on project outcomes, metrics, and community engagement efforts.
  • Participate in meetings, consultation opportunities, workshops, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Integrate traditional ecological knowledge and cultural perspectives into climate and energy planning.
  • Must have a working knowledge and be able to adhere to all tribal ordinances, policies and procedures, EPA permitting process, THPO permitting process and any other regulations that are applicable to the grant projects.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Tribal Preference will be priority.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, climate science, natural resource management, energy policy, or related field preferred.
  • Strong analytical, research, report-writing skills, reading comprehension, attention to detail, and willingness to self-study.
  • Previous experience in grant writing and securing funding for projects highly preferred.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work as a member of a team with an interest and willingness to achieve Tribal energy and climate goals.
  • Appreciation of Native American culture and values.
  • Must have excellent communication and leadership skills.
