AFSP Wisconsin Chapter Community Engagement & Development Intern

Duration and Time Commitment

Flexible. Internship dates will be coordinated based on chapter needs and the student’s academic requirements.

Hours and Pay

15–20 hours per week

This is an unpaid position. Interns will receive a stipend of $500 monthly.

This internship must be completed for college credit. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a college or university program and eligible to receive academic credit for the internship.

Workplace Location

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has chapters in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. Chapters have no physical offices, and employees work remotely.

This internship is open to students who reside in Wisconsin. The intern must have the flexibility and capacity to work remotely within Wisconsin and attend select in-person events, meetings, programs, and other chapter activities throughout the state. Some events may take place during evenings or weekends.

Internship Overview

The AFSP Wisconsin Chapter Community Engagement & Development Internship provides a student with hands‑on experience working with a nationwide nonprofit organization at the local chapter level.

The intern will work closely with the Wisconsin Executive Director and collaborate with members of the AFSP Wisconsin Chapter Board of Directors, chapter committees, volunteers, and community partners.

This internship offers experience in nonprofit operations, fundraising and development, community engagement, program coordination, event planning, research, communications, and volunteer leadership.

About the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide.

AFSP works to create a culture that is smart about mental health by funding scientific research, educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention, advocating for public policies, and supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide.

AFSP has local chapters across the country that bring the organization’s mission to communities through education, advocacy, loss and healing support, community engagement, fundraising, volunteer leadership, and signature events such as the Out of the Darkness Walks.

Job Description

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Wisconsin Chapter is seeking a motivated and organized college student interested in gaining real‑world experience in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, community engagement, programs, communications, and events.

The selected candidate will assist the Wisconsin Executive Director and work alongside members of the Chapter Board of Directors, volunteers, and community partners on a variety of chapter initiatives.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducting research to identify prospective sponsors, corporate partners, community partners, and other opportunities to support chapter fundraising and growth
  • Assisting with sponsorship outreach, follow-up, tracking, and development efforts for Out of the Darkness Community and Campus Walks
  • Supporting AFSP programs, community events, and Out of the Darkness Walks through planning, coordination, promotion, email marketing, and day‑of event support
  • Pulling reports, maintaining tracking tools, and assisting with communications and administrative projects, including Canva design when experience or interest allows
