The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a licensed registered nurse with graduate preparation (master’s or doctorate) in nursing as a clinical nurse specialist. The CNS provides expert comprehensive nursing care directly to patients, supports nursing professional development, and leads redesign of systems to improve access, quality, and safety in a cost‑effective manner. The CNS is a clinical expert in diagnosing, treating, and evaluating patients with various health conditions within the specialty, and designs population‑based programs to enhance patient‑and family‑outcomes.
The CNS functions autonomously and collaborates with Medical College of Wisconsin physicians to optimize care for the specific population served.
- Clinical practice and direct patient care
- Program design and development
- Consultation with physicians and interdisciplinary teams
- Leadership and mentorship of nursing staff
- Education and training of staff and patients
- Clinical research and evidence‑based practice implementation
- Monitoring patient outcomes for effectiveness
- Master's or DNP in Nursing from a CNS accredited program (required)
- Registered Nurse licensure in Wisconsin (required)
- Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber licensure within 1 year of employment (required)
- Clinical Nurse Specialist certification within 1 year of employment (required)
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) or equivalent within 90 days (required)
- Experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist preferred
- Experience in the specialty population preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Project management experience preferred
