CICU is an 8‑bed, high‑acuity unit on the 8th floor of the Garden Tower at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We treat critically ill cardiac, interventional cardiac, and complex medical patients including acute MI, cardiogenic shock, dysrhythmias, multisystem organ failure, pre‑heart transplant and post‑procedural care (stents, valvuloplasty, TAVR, etc.).
Required Experience1+ year Acute Care RN experience preferred.
Major Responsibilities- Use the nursing process to assess patient needs, plan, implement individualized interventions, and evaluate care effectiveness, involving patients and families.
- Anticipate and recognize significant patient condition changes; adjust care plans, mobilize resources, and collaborate with the health‑care team.
- Implement patient‑risk reduction strategies and enhance patient safety, assessing readiness to learn and tailoring education accordingly.
- Coordinate discharge plans using an interdisciplinary approach, applying evidence‑based practice and regulatory standards.
- Evaluate unit and patient outcomes, taking appropriate actions, and support shared governance initiatives to improve care.
- Demonstrate effective communication and conflict resolution, promote collaboration, and lead delegation to unlicensed personnel.
- Promote a safety culture, report safety events promptly, and assist in corrective actions.
- Apply ethical decision making and respect for all clinical disciplines.
- Participate in quality and process improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience.
- Engage in professional development activities, attend required meetings, and complete annual competencies timely.
- Use age‑appropriate care principles, assessing developmental needs and applying policies accordingly.
- Registered Nurse license issued by the state of practice.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Completion of an accredited or approved nursing program.
- 1 year RN experience in acute nursing preferred.
- Holistic patient care and patient/family perspective.
- Recognize situational changes requiring immediate, confident interventions.
- Proficient computer skills and use of electronic medical records.
- Excellent written and oral communication, listening, and interpersonal skills.
- Build rapport and maintain professional relationships with patients, team members, and physicians.
- Make critical, independent decisions effectively.
- Organize, prioritize, and solve problems efficiently.
- Manage time and multitask in a high‑interruption environment.
- Coordinate collaboration, delegation, and team building.
- Maintain annual educational requirements for hospital‑based certifications (e.g., DNV, CARF).
- Sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach, and twist frequently during the workday.
- Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist; up to 20 lbs. overhead; carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
- Push or pull with up to 30 lbs. of force; perform 150‑lb. sliding transfer with assistance; operate foot pedals on carts or machines.
- Potential exposure to chemicals, hazardous waste, blood, body fluids, and communicable diseases; protective gear required.
- Functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch; fine‑hand manipulation skills for IV insertion and other procedures.
- Operate all equipment necessary to perform the job.
