Position Summary
The Nurse Extern is a member of the nursing team who contributes to the comfort and well‑being of patients by performing specifically assigned tasks under the direction of the Registered Nurse within scope of practice. The role supports the six dimensions of Relationship‑Based Care—Resources, Teamwork, Care Delivery, Outcomes, Professional Practice, and Leadership—by providing safe passage for patients and families. The Nurse Extern is expected to participate in shared decision‑making, use the JMC Pathway for objective, data‑driven decision making, and support the hospital’s mission of delivering excellence.
Educationand Qualifications
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with completion of the first semester, including the fundamentals of nursing course; or recent graduate of an accredited program within the last six months.
- Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) licensure in the state of Florida (preferred).
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (preferred).
- Two letters of recommendation from a nursing school instructor, one of which may be from employer.
- For each subsequent semester, provide evidence (transcript or grade report) of continued enrollment and progress toward graduation as a nurse.
- Employee may remain a Nurse Extern for a maximum of two and one‑half years.

Speaks and writes clearly, tailoring messages to audience needs while listening attentively and exercising tact. - Promoting Diversity and Inclusion:
Treats all people with dignity and respect, challenges bias, and fosters inclusive environments regardless of background.
- Physical demands include stooping, sitting, standing, and walking for long periods.
- Frequent assistance with lifting patients and heavy equipment.
- Ability to push/pull up to 40 lbs and lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
- Work in a stressful environment, independently making sound decisions, detail‑oriented, alert, and self‑motivated.
- Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements, in‑service training, and health requirements including new employee orientation.
- TB/PPD Surveillance Program participation.
- Maintenance of required professional licensing and/or certification(s).
