Position Summary
The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide specialty medical care at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, WI. The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team and will contribute to excellence in patient care, patient safety, quality improvement, and teaching.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments—including histories, physical exams, and evaluation of physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status—across a complex surgical population.
- Order and interpret laboratory values, imaging, and diagnostic studies, and develop individualized pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical management plans.
- Manage postoperative recovery and longitudinal inpatient care, monitoring treatment effectiveness and adjusting plans in response to clinical changes.
- Perform bedside procedures within scope and credentialing, and provide hands‑on support in the perioperative environment.
- Collaborate closely with CT surgery attendings, fellows, residents, nursing staff, intensivists, and subspecialty consultants to deliver coordinated, team‑based care.
- Educate and counsel patients and families on diagnoses, procedures, recovery expectations, and discharge planning.
- Document thoroughly and accurately within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Full-time, 1.0 FTE | Salaried (Exempt)
- 10–12 hour rotating shifts; average 40 hours per week
- Monthly rotating schedule that may flex based on practice needs, including days, evenings, and occasional weekends and holidays
- Position requires flexibility to support coverage across the service, including high census periods, planned leaves, and unexpected absences
- Opportunity to pick up additional shifts as mutually agreed upon

Department/Division HighlightsThe Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin includes 12 faculty surgeons—actively growing toward 15—and is supported by a team of 20+ advanced practice providers and 14 perfusionists. The division performs nearly 2,000 adult cardiac and thoracic procedures annually, with volumes growing through expanded regional referrals and deeper integration within the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Service Line. The team delivers 24/7 APP and perfusionist coverage across all service lines.
QualificationsPreferred Experience
- Previous experience in vascular surgery or a surgical subspecialty preferred, including ambulatory clinic management, inpatient consultative care, perioperative management, and operating room support.
- Open to experienced APPs; new graduates may be considered with relevant clinical training.
- Advanced Practice Nurse:
Master’s Degree or higher in Nursing from a nationally accredited organization. - Physician Assistant:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA-accredited organization.

- Wisconsin RN License
- Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License

- Nurse Practitioner Certification from a nationally accredited professional nursing organization

- Wisconsin Physician Assistant License
- Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- Certification Requirements

- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required within 6 months of start date
- DEA registration
