The Operation Room (OR) RN Service Coordinator facilitates collaboration among a multidisciplinary surgical team to achieve excellent patient outcomes. Identifies and pursues expected patient outcomes in collaboration with the surgical interdisciplinary care team. Reports to a OR Manager/Director. Provides oversight for OR staff ensuring delivery of competent clinical nursing/surgical tech care for a specific patient population. Functions as a subject matter expert for their specialty service.
Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with healthcare organization and nursing standards, policies, and procedures. Performs and provides oversight of complex clinical tasks and procedures requiring specialty training in both clinical competencies, EMR documentation, preference card management, staffing and staff orientation/training. Assists with hiring, evaluation, and supporting OR team members. Participates in evaluation of equipment and budget processes for area of specialty.
Provides direct patient care to service‑specific patients to maintain competency in specialty. Performs all functions of an Operating Room Registered Nurse.
Approximately two years of clinical practice in the operating room in a designated specialty is required. Prior experience as a charge RN, educator, or council co‑chair is preferred.
EducationProfessional knowledge of nursing theory and practice at a level normally acquired through completion of education at an accredited School of Nursing is required. Upon hire, any non‑BSN nurse with less than one year of licensed registered nurse experience must enroll in a BSN (or higher nursing degree) program. Acceptance into a program is expected within 15 months of hire and the degree program must be completed within five years of enrollment, or six years if the program is MSN, DNP or PhD in Nursing.
A bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively and work cohesively with a diverse work group; to coordinate staffing and patient load capacity; and to function efficiently in a stressful and changing environment. Demonstrates excellent communication/people skills, resiliency, and flexibility to deal with an ever‑changing health‑care environment.
LicensureRequires current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or a multi‑state Nursing License from a participating state in the Nurse Licensure Compact. American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA‑approved equivalent is required upon hire. Certified Nurse – Operating Room (CNOR) certification is required within six months of hire into the role. Any incumbent who is not CNOR certified must become certified within six months of activation of the job description.
