Nurse Extern – Cardiac Angioplasty, 10S – December 2026 graduates, Aurora St. Luke’s
Start as a nurse extern and transition to a nursing position upon graduation. The externship is designed to facilitate a smooth transition into RN practice.
10S is a 24‑bed, high‑acuity unit focused on interventional cardiology patients, including pre‑ and post‑procedural care, STEMI, heart failure, and pre‑operative open‑heart surgery/TAVR.
Responsibilities include providing comprehensive patient care following the nursing process, coordinating care, and ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment.
Must be available to start August 2026. 8‑hour shifts per week are required.
Major Responsibilities- Under RN supervision, complete activities of daily living, vital sign and blood glucose monitoring.
- Collaborate with RN in developing a patient care plan based on assessment and patient/family preferences.
- Evaluate responses to interventions and communicate observations and patient needs to RN.
- Develop delegation skills for unit coordinators, nursing assistants, and technical roles.
- Administer medication as delegated, after required competency assessment.
- Manage increased patient loads and apply time‑management principles during shifts.
- Collect and synthesize patient data to identify status and needs.
- Participate in emergency activities under RN supervision as appropriate.
- Perform patient positioning, transport, and lifting/pushing/pulling tasks using proper technique.
- Provide age‑appropriate care, applying principles of growth and development across the lifespan.
- None required.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program or graduate of such a program.
- No experience required.
- Current enrollment (final year) or graduation from an accredited nursing program.
- Successful completion of a medical‑surgical course including pharmacology concepts.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders.
- Lift up to 50 lb. from floor to waist; lift up to 20 lb. over the head; carry up to 40 lb. for a reasonable distance.
- Push/pull with 30 lb. of force; perform a sliding transfer of 150 lb. with a second person present.
- Use foot pedals on carts or machines.
- Have functional vision and hearing.
- Be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and radiation hazards and blood and body fluids; protective clothing as required.
- Operate all necessary equipment.
