Patient Types:
- R/O chest pain, post cath lab, CHF, AFib, r/o CVAs, TIAs, post IR, cellulitis, AKI
- Rarely have surgical patients
- Average patient stay: 36H
- Rare COVID patients – tested prior
- Admit/discharge 2-3 patients daily
Patient Ratios:
- Day - 1:4-5
- Night - 1:6-8

Required Certifications: BLS
Skills required
- Ostomy care, some drains, IV skills,
- Most patients are ambulatory
- Drip management: heparin, insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone
- No ventilators/trachs
- Basic MS skills, experience in observation unit (preferred)
- Experience in admissions/discharges, fast pace
Support on the Unit:
- Charge nurse: takes a lighter patient assignment
- Unit secretary: 24/7
- Hospitalist: 24/7
- RT in house 24/7
- Centralized telemetry monitoring with tele tech 24/7
- Phlebotomy to assist with peripheral blood draws
Charting System/Equipment:
- EPIC
- Alaris
- Pyxis
- Client monitors
Floating:
- MSUs
- ED Holding – 1:4 ratio
- Travelers first
Orientation:
- 4-8h NEO orientation (dayshift) – Meet with Educator, supervisor, manager
- One full shift on the unit or based on experience
Scheduling:
- Weekend rotation: every other
- Schedule is created 6 weeks at a time, will receive 2 weeks before the start of schedule.
- RTO:
Able to approve up to 7 days, email NM Bill DeMeyer for additional days - No on-call
- AAH adheres to a fatigue policy where all staff, including travelers, cannot work more than 60 hours in a week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts
- Holiday Expectations: 1 holiday per season.

Any - no camo/denim - Must document pain level, before and after (1 hour for oral) giving pain medications - The pain score must also meet the pain score with nth medication order i.e. if a patient has a score of 8, the RN cannot give the Tylenol that is ordered for mild 1-3. The RN must call for an order if the patient wants Tylenol for the score of 8.
