Description:

The facility is a Level III Trauma Center and has a Level III NICU. It holds a Magnet designation and is a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The facility has a total of 933 beds, including 27 general information beds. The patient types include those undergoing cath lab procedures, amputations, and pre-surgical assessments; after surgery, most patients do not return unless no intervention is required.

Open heart and vascular patients typically will not return and we manage conditions such as CHF, EP studies, atrial fibrillation, dysrhythmias, and Coumadin loading. Patient care involves a range of cardiac issues, particularly heart failure. The nurse-to-patient ratio during days and PM shifts is 1:4-5 and during overnight shifts is 1:6-8. During the day shifts, the tech-to-patient ratio is 1:6, and at night, it is 1:7.

Support on the unit includes a charge nurse who manages 2-3 patients during the day and has a full assignment re is a unit secretary available 24/7 and a hospitalist, respiratory therapy, and centralized telemetry monitoring available around the clock with a telemetry tech. Phlebotomy assistance is provided for peripheral blood draws and the charting system used is EPIC, which is preferred.

Floating may occur to other inpatient areas within the RN's scope of practice, and there is a possibility of floating to the ICU for appropriate medical-surgical patient assignments, though this is rare. For travelers, floating may be required at any time during the shift to a comparable patient acuity area. Scheduling requires weekend rotations every other weekend with no block scheduling.

Time off can be approved for up to 7 days. Holiday expectations include working one summer and one winter holiday. There is a fatigue policy in place that dictates all staff, including travelers, cannot work more than 60 hours in a week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts. Scrub colors can be any color except camo or denim. Pain levels must be documented before and after administering pain medication.

If a patient's pain score is above a prescribed range, the RN must consult for a new order.
