Job Purpose and Reporting Structure
The Analytical Chemist will perform analytical testing of in-house products using various analytical techniques and provide technical support to the laboratory team to meet Materion's requirements for customers and the ISO 17025 management system. The Analytical Chemist reports to the Analytical Lab Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate, calibrate, perform preventive maintenance, and troubleshoot analytical instruments (ICP-OES, ICP-MS, AAS).
- Work with the Senior Analytical Chemist to qualify, develop, validate, and continuously improve analytical equipment, test methods, and lab practices to generate high-quality and timely test results.
- Provide technical support for equipment, test methods, and practices; select, install, maintain, and develop methods for laboratory equipment.
- Participate in qualification of new analytical instruments and implementation of new analytical methods.
- Write and review Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions.
- Provide effective training to other lab personnel on use of analytical equipment and systems.
- Proficiently use computers, standard office software and systems (e.g., LIMS, SAP) and perform accurate and rapid data entry.
- Maintain open and active communication with management and peers regarding workflow, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
- Follow all clean-up and housekeeping procedures.
- Comply with all quality, safety, and work rules and regulations; provide suggestions for quality and safety improvements.
- Preference for candidates with a two- or four-year degree in a STEM field; a high school diploma, technical school, or GED required at minimum with 7-10 years of relevant analytical laboratory experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Sound decision-making skills and ability to take decisive action with minimal input, and to determine when supervisory input is required.
- Ability to perform intermediate mathematical calculations.
- Basic understanding of ASTM standards and ISO 17025 accreditation requirements.
- Proficiency in Excel functions, LIMS (including daily operational functions), and other standard office software.
- Export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology (ITAR/EAR); applicant must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful permanent resident, or otherwise qualify as specified.
