Overview

This opportunity is ideal for candidates early in their environmental career who want hands‑on experience with natural resource assessments, permitting, and fieldwork. Candidates receive mentorship and training while contributing to meaningful conservation‑related projects across Wisconsin. Exposure to wetland delineation, species identification, GIS tools, and varied project types fosters strong career growth.

Responsibilities

Environmental Review, Analysis and Permitting (70%)

  • Conduct environmental reviews and prepare permit applications in coordination with the Natural Resources team.
  • Draft and compile technical documents and reports to support permitting processes for utility, municipal, site design, and other development projects.
  • Interpret and apply ecological data, cultural resource information, construction practices, compliance requirements, and ecosystem plans.
  • Ensure that permit applications include the necessary project‑specific details and analysis to facilitate complete and timely regulatory reviews.

Project Coordination & Program Administration (20%)

  • Support administration of the Natural Resources program, including maintaining meeting agendas, minutes, project files, and field equipment.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss project progress, timelines, critical‑path tasks, and permitting strategies for restoration, mitigation, and development projects.
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of assigned meetings and project activities.

Permitting & Internal Collaboration (10%)

  • Serve as a subject matter resource on local, county, state, and federal environmental permitting programs.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure all required approvals are identified and secured.
  • Communicate permit status, conditions, and requirements to internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical summaries, compliance documentation, and other reports as requested.
Qualifications
  • Strong interest in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, natural resource conservation, and field‑based environmental work.
  • Problem‑solving mindset with strong attention to detail and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements (state and federal).
  • Effective time management, organization, and follow‑through.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • GIS and GPS experience preferred.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in botany, biology, ecology, natural resources, wildlife biology, or a related environmental field.
  • Working knowledge of plant, soil, and wetland identification and characterization.
  • Physical ability to walk long distances in uneven terrain, carry equipment, and work in varying weather conditions.
  • Experience with fieldwork, including wildlife surveys and threatened & endangered species habitat assessments, is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
