Job Description

The Public Safety Manager oversees the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) Public Safety program, ensuring secure, efficient, and compliant public transportation services. This role manages the day-to-day operations, supervises Public Safety Supervisors, and provides indirect oversight of Public Safety Officers. The position emphasizes staff management, resource allocation, and collaboration with law enforcement and community stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Management: Oversee daily operations of the Public Safety program;
    Develop and enforce standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Staffing and Training: Manage hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions;
    Create schedules, track overtime, and ensure adequate staffing;
    Conduct and coordinate training for new and existing employees.
  • Security Operations: Supervise contracted Transit Security Officers and monitor their activity;
    Investigate security incidents and act as incident commander when needed;
    Collaborate with law enforcement to address security concerns.
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement: Address security trends with community stakeholders;
    Coordinate with third-party agencies to enhance safety resources.
  • Administrative Duties: Manage equipment inventory and budget requests;
    Prepare and review security reports and performance metrics.
Requirements Education and Experience
  • Required:
    • 5 years of experience as a certified law enforcement officer, military police, Transit Security Officer, or Public Safety/Security Officer.
    • 3 years of managerial experience in law enforcement, public safety/security, military, or transit operations.
    • Valid Class D Wisconsin driver’s license (non-probationary).
  • Preferred:
    • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or a related field.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of MCTS operations, criminal justice systems, and security practices.
  • Ability to supervise teams, manage conflict, and balance competing interests.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
  • Ability to develop and execute safety strategies and policies.
