Job Requirements
The City of Wauwatosa Department of Public Works is hiring for an experienced Electrical Technician. This position performs skilled electrical work that involves the maintenance, repair, and installation of street lighting systems, traffic signal systems, motors, controls, and other related electrical equipment. Salary range is $38.70 - $49.44 per hour, with starting pay determined on qualifications and professional experience. A sign-on bonus of $2,500 is offered.
A Journeyman Electrician License or Master Electrician license is strongly preferred. Progression to the top two steps of the salary grade (Steps 15–16) is limited to those who hold either of these licenses.
- Locate, dig by hand and equipment, and repair faulted street light cables.
- Accurately troubleshoot HID and LED street lighting fixtures and components.
- Install various sizes of concrete and aluminum light poles both direct buried and base mounted.
- Record and track street lighting substation resistance readings.
- Perform maintenance on high voltage electrical street lighting substations and components.
- Locate underground cables for Diggers Hotline.
- Read and interpret plans, drawings, as-builts, and schematics.
- Install and maintain traffic signal control systems.
- Install and maintain motors, motor controllers, generators and other related electrical equipment in various municipal buildings.
- Perform all electrical work in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
- Occasionally assist with emergency snow removal operations as needed.
- Rotate on call responding to emergencies outside of normal business hours, weekends, and holidays.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Three years’ experience as an electrician.
- Three years’ experience in street lighting and traffic control systems.
- Experience operating a Derrick/auger truck and safe operation of aerial lift trucks.
- Experience locating faulted underground electrical cables and operating related equipment.
- Experience installing and maintaining traffic signal systems and equipment.
- Experience with Personal Protective Safety procedures when working around live high voltage electrical equipment.
- Valid WI Driver License.
- A Class B CDL must be obtained within one year of employment; this time frame may be extended depending on availability of internal training resources.
- Journeyman Electrician License or Master Electrician License strongly preferred; progression to Steps 15–16 is limited to holders of these licenses.
- Completed courses related to electrical theory and electrical code.
- Proficient electrical knowledge to solve electrical maintenance problems; working knowledge of the National Electrical Code.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, plans, schematics, and specifications of electrical installations.
- Physical ability to lift and move up to 25–50 pounds, work outdoors in all types of weather, climb at various heights, and sustain manual work for extended periods.
- Ability to work at great heights above ground and comply with safe ladder, pole, and tower use.
- Good close, distance, color, depth vision and ability to focus.
The employee must frequently use hands, finger, handle, grip, feel, push, and pull, and sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, reach, climb, balance, talk, and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and carry up to or in excess of 50 pounds. The employee must possess the physical stamina to perform sustained manual work for extended periods.
WorkEnvironment
Work exposes the employee to risk of electrical shock, outside weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, high and precarious places, and moderate noise levels. Work may involve conditions at various heights above the ground.
