JOB SUMMARY

Supervises and coordinates day-to-day maintenance and garage operations at an assigned transit facility to ensure buses are safe, reliable, and available to meet scheduled service requirements. Oversees maintenance personnel and shop activities including preventive maintenance, repairs, inspections, cleaning, fueling, and bus parking to support daily pull-out and operational readiness. Ensures compliance with all applicable safety standards, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations, Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). and agency policies.

Monitors maintenance performance, work quality, and operational efficiency while promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement. Works collaboratively with Operations, Dispatch, and other departments to ensure timely response to service interruptions, vehicle defects, and road calls. Provides leadership, coaching, and guidance to maintenance staff while ensuring accurate documentation of maintenance activities, investigations, and regulatory reporting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supervises daily maintenance operations to ensure buses are safe, reliable, and available for scheduled service.
  • Ensures buses meet daily service requirements by managing maintenance activities that support fleet availability and scheduled pull-outs.
  • Provides coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to maintenance personnel. Ensures buses meet daily pull-out requirements and fleet availability targets.
  • Administers labor agreements and enforces workplace policies and disciplinary procedures. Ensures facilities, equipment, and tools are properly maintained and operational. Monitors maintenance performance indicators including Mean Distance Between Service Calls (MDBSC), Preventive Maintenance (PM) compliance, shop productivity, and overtime usage.
  • Conducts investigations of accidents, road calls, and equipment failures. Ensures compliance with Federal Transit Authority (FTA), Department of Transportation  Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), and agency safety regulations.
  • Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) years of experience as a mechanic or similar position within a maintenance setting required.
  • Valid Class D Wisconsin Driver’s License (non-probationary) required.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with “P” Endorsement with no air brake restriction or ability to obtain valid CDL permit.
  • Associate's Degree in Automotive Maintenance, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory or foreman experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of diesel engines, systems and other heavy-duty vehicle equipment and components.
  • Knowledge of Federal Transit Administration and Federal Motor Carrier rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of MCTS operations and policies.
  • Knowledge of applicable union contracts.
  • Skilled in computer operations and related software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Dynamics 365, Outlook).
  • Ability to manage conflict and balance competing interests from multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to coach, support, and lead/supervise others.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
  • Work is frequently conducted in an office, shop, construction or warehouse site environment with frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts or airborne particles, toxic chemicals or substances, and loud noises.
  • Physical requirements are those described as light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects.
  • Must submit to and pass a DOT drug screen upon offer acceptance.
