Overview
Old Dominion is seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented individual to serve as a Dockworker. This role is essential for ensuring safe, efficient loading, unloading, and overall material handling operations.
Job SummaryThe dockworker must efficiently load and unload freight, ensuring correct items are placed on the right trucks. Safety is paramount; equipment such as forklifts and manual techniques are used to handle materials. Proper securing of freight with airbags, straps, and cardboard is crucial to prevent damage.
Primary Responsibilities- Load and unload freight on trailers using motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manual methods, complying with state and federal DOT guidelines.
- Use various loading techniques (tight loading, cross loading, etc.).
- Transport self and/or freight across the service center on non-forgiving surfaces.
- Utilize Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight shipment locations.
- Read and interpret shipping labels and complete related forms (shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage movement reports, exception forms).
- Hand-load, rewrap or stack freight as necessary.
- Ensure quality loading of all trailers.
- Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, rope, etc.
- Maintain frequent contact with service center personnel; work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of safe and efficient lifting and transporting procedures.
- Knowledge of freight transportation procedures and loading techniques.
- Ability to complete freight movement forms and use the dock yard management system.
- Availability for work at all times to meet customer schedules.
- Proficiency in operating handheld tablets.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Stand up to 8 hours per shift, 5-7 days per week on non-forgiving surfaces.
- Sit inside forklift up to 8 hours per shift.
- Walk up to 8 hours daily on various surfaces.
- Perform frequent squatting, bending, kneeling, and climbing as required.
- Load and unload trailers with freight up to 500 lbs.
- Push and pull freight (and forklift components) up to 100 lbs.
- Reach for freight at various heights; operate forklift controls.
- Lift objects up to 100 lbs. using OSHA guidelines.
- Work in hot or cold climates, with noise and odors.
- Maintain attendance; work various shifts.
The dockworker operates in a dynamic environment that may include enclosed vehicles, trailers, weather exposure, varying noise levels, and lighting conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for disabilities.
Working Days & ShiftMonday through Friday; PM shift; schedule may vary based on business levels.
