Clerk 1-Delay Operator

Delay Operators are responsible for recording, classifying, and reporting events adversely affecting the performance of Metro-North Railroad (MNR) train operations as well as third party train performance operating on Metro-North territory.
- Receive information from Operation Control Center (OCC) personnel regarding all train delays within MNR service territory.
- Record all failures that affect MNR, AMTRAK, and West of Hudson train operations by entering information into the late train system (LTS).
- Receive and electronically record data on AMTRAK system performance.
- Compile information to complete and distribute operation reports on a timely basis.
- Receive and prepare supervisor's injury reports for daily operations reports.
- Assist the Chief Rail Traffic Controller during service disruptions by administratively handling minor delays and recording information.
- Review the Chief's log and observe the train board to identify possible causes of delays.
- Communicate with other departments regarding causes of delays.
- Analyze data for themes and trends to assist with identifying causes of delays.
- Perform additional clerical duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to learn quickly; ability to perform basic mental mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
- Must have basic reading comprehension ability; interpersonal and customer service skills; time management skills and strong attention to detail.
- Skilled in exercising independent judgment; ability to anticipate and analyze problems and take corrective actions; must be able to evaluate a situation to make decisions and work under pressure.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to multi-task and function effectively under changing priorities.
- Knowledge of computer systems and word processing; ability to perform in a fast-paced environment;
- Ability to shift between extremely busy times and prolonged downtime; must be safety conscious.
Required Education/
Experience:
- High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).
- Ability to type a minimum of 35 words per minute.
- Must successfully qualify on all three shifts within a thirty-day (30) period.
- Must be available to be on call for assignments.
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced, highly visible environment where priorities are constantly changing.
The following is/are preferred:
- knowledge of Metro North's operating and safety rules.
- Experience with L.T.S (Late train System) and Database software.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working in a position with significant responsibility.
The starting rate for this position is $29.679971/hour (70% of the full rate). The annual wage progression scale is as follows:
- Year 1 & 2= 70%
- Year 3= 75%
- Year 4= 80%
- Year 5 & 6= 85%
- Year 7= 90%
- Year 8= 100%
The 100% full rate of pay is $42.399958/hour.
This salary is non-negotiable, based on the Bargaining Agreement.
