Singer Instruments designs robots that empower scientists in laboratories in over 60 countries to accelerate research on global challenges such as cures for cancer and solutions for renewable energies.

We’re looking for PIPs interns ( BBSRC or MRC funded PhD).

Located in Exmoor on the UK's South West coast, Singer offers world‑class culture. An engaged team makes great products!

• The industry placement must be an explicit part of your programme of study.
• You must have funding to support yourself for 3 months. Singer Instruments will provide all the resources required for your project and can help towards your accommodation costs. All other costs (travel, food) must be covered by the student or the student’s institution. Students with BBSRC or MRC funding automatically meet these requirements.

You don’t need any background knowledge for these roles, just a willingness to learn. Both our R&D Manager and Senior Scientist completed their PIPs internships here and returned to work full‑time after finishing their PhDs. Working with you, we will develop your project to suit you and deliver real business value while ensuring you get exposure to the experiences that matter to you.

The project and collaborators will vary based on our department priorities, which may change rapidly. Due to the short‑term nature of our projects, we often won’t confirm exactly what you’ll be working on until only a few weeks before you arrive.

• Encoding an automated analysis report generation program to test our latest feature.
• Proof of concept experiments for high‑throughput UV mutagenesis on the ROTOR+.
• Market research and product testing of our new Liquid Handler.
• Design and testing of the user interface for our PIXL Zone of Inhibition beta feature.

Our Research department exists to ensure our products exceed the scientific capabilities our customers require. PIPs students design and implement instrument testing procedures, develop scientific workflows, work alongside hardware and software engineers to drive product development, and engineer data‑analysis platforms using R and Python.

Join our dynamic team and shape the future of our company's products. Collaborate with customers, sales, marketing, science, and robotics teams to gather insights, research competitors, and assess business value for future products. Translate findings into actionable requirements for engineers to bring innovative instruments to life or suggest what you think we should build next.

You’ll interview scientists across disciplines to discover their motivations, highlight their biggest lab problems, explore product solutions, and test the impact of any changes implemented. Improve the experience of scientists so their discoveries progress faster.

Dive into customer segmentation data to uncover trends and tactics key to transforming our business. Use your skills to find opportunities, develop new strategies, and create compelling scientific content—blogs, application notes, social media posts—and collaborate with industry experts on case studies and testimonials.

Help us identify prospects that would benefit from our portfolio. Use scientific knowledge to assess labs, determine funding and grants, and evaluate their ability to purchase. Learn to use leading‑edge tools in Sales and Business Development to nurture targets and pursue sales.
