Join a team of collaborative professionals who share a purpose to serve our community. This position reports to the Programs Director and works closely with other staff and volunteers. The emphasis of this position is to greet visitors, manage incoming phone calls, and monitor public spaces to maintain a safe environment.
Organization SummarySTEP responds to our neighbors in need by providing access to vital services that foster stability. STEP provides direct services to residents who may need food, clothing, financial assistance, and transportation, as well as counseling regarding resources and problem solving. STEP is well known in the community, recognized as the primary social service organization to address concerns of about 4,000 neighbors who live with the challenges of poverty.
The organization is comprised of 14 part‑time and full‑time staff with an average tenure of 5+ years and supported by 140+ volunteers.
This position provides administrative and clerical support to STEP. It is a key role which interfaces with staff, volunteers, community visitors, and clients.
Responsibilities include:
- Communicate clearly, write effectively, establish friendly, professional relationships, and establish trust.
- Manage incoming phone calls, transferring calls, and greeting guests upon entrance to the building.
- Disseminate general information about STEP services and operations to callers and visitors
- Check in clients for appointments.
- Schedule clients for future appointments.
- Assist other staff with projects as needed.
- Scheduling client appointments using a computer.
- Experience in direct service or customer service.
- Strategic thinker and problem solver.
- Working knowledge of the Internet and common Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience answering phones and directing calls.
- Experience working in a direct service non‑profit organization.
- Familiarity with St. Louis Park community.
- Ability to speak Spanish, Russian, or Somali.

Physical Requirements- Able to remain in a stationary position at least 90% of the time.
- Operate a computer keyboard and other office machinery, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone.
- The person in this position frequently communicates with staff, volunteers, and clients, and must exchange accurate information verbally, in writing, and by phone.
The exact work schedule is open to negotiation. Generally, this position will require work on Tuesday afternoons and evenings, and during the day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings. Due to STEP’s mission to provide direct service and our small professional team, employees are needed to work on‑site.
TypeThis position is temporary, non‑exempt and full‑time (30-40 hours/week). The position will last at least through June 2026. Depending on the needs of the organization, the position may be extended.
CompensationWage is $25.00/hour. There will be a $2.00/hour increase if employee is proficient in Spanish, Russian, or Somali. Benefits include retirement (SIMPLE IRA with 3% match), employer‑paid Life and Disability Insurance, paid holidays (13 annual), paid safe & sick leave (12 days annual), and vacation leave (12 days annual during first year).
