Description
Hennepin County’s Elections department is seeking to fill several temporary Elections Assistant positions to support the absentee mail team through the 2026 General Election. These positions will primarily consist of data entry, mail out absentee voting support, processing absentee ballots and other administrative duties as assigned. Elections Assistants must perform duties in a non-partisan manner and be able to use technical and analytical skills and perform a variety of administrative functions.
The Elections department is looking for individuals interested in election administration, government processes, and interaction with residents.
These positions will be performed on site at the 625 Building at 625 4th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55415. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with some flexibility. Occasional evenings, weekends, and overtime may be required.
Position TypesThese are seasonal, limited duration (temporary), full‑time, non‑benefit‑earning positions. These positions will start September 8, 2026 with an expected end date of November 6, 2026. They are internally classified as an Office Specialist I.
In These Positions, You Will- Process a high volume of time sensitive election material.
- Perform data entry of absentee ballot applications and voter registration applications.
- Issue absentee ballots by mail.
- Review returned absentee ballots to ensure they meet all the legal requirements for being counted.
- Assist with processing and counting absentee ballots.
- One of the following:
- One or more full‑time equivalent years of office clerical experience.
- Six months or more of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program.
- Note:
Education may be substituted for experience on a semester (12 credits) basis.
- Experience:
- Using the Statewide Voter Registration System.
- Performing data entry from paper and/or electronic documents into a computer system.
- Providing in‑person and/or over‑the‑phone customer service to the public.
- Working with Microsoft Office Suite applications such as Outlook, Word, etc.
- Knowledge of:
- Basic policies and procedures related to elections.
- Using different computerized systems/databases.
- Ability to:
- Lift materials up to 25 pounds.
- Follow instructions completely and accurately.
- Work in accordance with Minnesota statutes and rules.
- Understand basic elections policy and procedures.
- Demonstrate teamwork skills working with a diverse group of co‑workers.
- Meet daily deadlines.
- Use problem‑solving techniques to complete daily work.
- Use a computer with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
