Position: Artist Collective Studio Fellowship 2026/2027

Position Description

Minnesota Center for Book Arts is seeking applications for five Artist Collective Studio Fellowship positions. The Artist Collective Studio Fellowship offers studio access and membership in MCBA’s Artist Collective for 13 months in exchange for 12–16 hours of work per month in MCBA’s studios during Studio Labs, a weekly equipment access opportunity for those with prior training. Studio Fellows support MCBA’s Studio Coordinator with studio and equipment maintenance, studio improvement projects, maintaining a clean and tidy workspace for artists, assisting Studio Lab participants with any questions or equipment issues, and occasional MCBA administrative tasks.

Studio Fellows are important ambassadors to MCBA’s artist community and play a key role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment.

About Studio Labs

MCBA’s Studio Labs provide access to studios and equipment outside of workshops. Participants enjoy fellowship with other makers as they work on independent projects in the bindery, wet studios, and print studios. Studio Fellows answer questions and support Lab participants as needed. Participants register in advance and must have adequate training to work independently. Studio Labs are held on Tuesdays (5–9pm) and one Saturday (10am–4pm) per month.

Qualifications
  • Intermediate or advanced-level experience working in at least one of the following processes: letterpress, screen printing, paper making, paper marbling, and bookbinding
  • Consistent in-person availability on Tuesdays from 5–8pm or 6–9pm and one Saturday per month from 10am–4pm. This is a 13 month commitment and requires dependable attendance.
  • Flexibility and willingness to support a variety of tasks as needed (such as moving furniture for an upcoming workshop, installing work in the gallery, providing equipment demonstrations, and cleaning and organizing the studios)
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • This is an in-person position. Applicants must be able to reliably get to and from Minnesota Center for Book Arts.
Additional Desirable Skills
  • Multilingual
  • Carpentry, woodworking, and other handyperson skills
  • Knowledge of other artistic disciplines, gallery work, and/or community studio spaces

Note:

while current members of the MCBA community are invited to apply, the goal is to grow the organization through this position, specifically by offering emerging artists an opportunity to both teach and learn in MCBA’s studios.

Fellowship Dates & Schedule

Studio Fellowships run from April 28, 2026, through May 25, 2027
, with Fellows working approximately 12–16 hours per month
. Initial orientation will take place Tuesday, April 28, 2026. Candidates must be available on Tuesday evenings from 5–8pm or 6–9pm and one Saturday per month (typically the first Saturday of the month) from 10am–4pm.

Fellows work one day per week. When there is a Saturday Studio Lab, there is no Lab the Tuesday prior.

Benefits
  • 13 month membership to MCBA’s Artist Collective, which provides 24-hour access to studios, equipment, tools, and library
  • Equipment training in MCBA’s studios
  • A year-long MCBA membership, which includes a 10% discount on workshop tuition (not materials fees) and all retail products in the Shop
