The Minnesota Star Tribune is an innovative modern media organization building on an extraordinary 159-year legacy. With eight Pulitzer Prizes and numerous other accolades, we stand as a beacon of journalistic excellence in Minnesota. We are the heart and voice of the North.
Our mission is to build a better Minnesota by connecting us with the people, ideas, and stories that strengthen our communities. We’re seeking dynamic leaders who are passionate about journalism and democracy to help shape this future. If you are excited about reinventing one of our state’s most trusted institutions and leading us into a new era of growth and excellence, we want to hear from you.
We offer 10-week summer reporting internships at our headquarters in Minneapolis, MN. We select talented, driven college juniors, seniors and graduate students who can cover breaking news, as well as write enterprise stories. We expect our interns to come to us with skill and leave with polish and invaluable experience from a major-market newsroom. Interns are paid $850 a week. Interns may be able to apply for any available apprenticeships at the completion of the summer.
We are seeking a talented and driven reporter for the sports department to cover breaking news and live events and develop enterprise stories. This assignment could involve in-person coverage of professional and college sports, as well as high school sports for the Star Tribune's Strib Varsity franchise. There are also opportunities in podcasting, video and social media. Candidates should have reporting experience and a demonstrated interest in sports, as well as the ability to work independently under deadline pressure.
This student will work collaboratively with editors, photographers and other reporters for a Top-10 sports department, as recognized by the Associated Press Sports Editors, and gain invaluable real-world experience in a big-time sports market with seven professional teams, Big Ten athletics and a thriving preps scene.
The Star Tribune is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace, and it encourages qualified applicants of all backgrounds to apply. Candidates should recognize that legacy news operations must merge diversity-and-inclusion aspirations with audience needs to succeed, and support that goal.
We expect our reporting interns to:
- develop their own story ideas and to run hard at the assignments we give them
- work closely with editors, photographers and other reporters to provide substantive news stories
- have a valid driver’s license
- be highly proficient writers
- conduct themselves in a professional manner
- work regularly from the Star Tribune office
Qualifications:
We select talented, driven college juniors, seniors and graduate students. Excellent communication and writing skills, flexibility and the ability to handle deadline pressure are all crucial in this job. We also value candidates who are proficient with web research tools, social media tools and InCopy or similar publishing software. Skills working with data, including analysis and building digital visualizations, are a plus.
The internship typically runs early June to early August.
