As a Physician Assistant in thoracic surgery, you will assist in all aspects of patient care – including diagnosis, treatment, and consultation – as part of a Physician/Physician Assistant team. You will work in both inpatient and outpatient settings, performing independently or as part of a treatment team, and you will serve as an educator, case manager, and consultant to staff and the multidisciplinary health‑care team.

Principle

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical care for patients
    • Complete comprehensive patient assessments
    • Determine diagnosis and treatment of illness
    • Order and interpret medical diagnostics in tandem with attending physician
    • Prescribe medications, treatments, therapy, and medical equipment
    • Conduct patient education to manage chronic illness or wellness care
    • Refer for specialty care when indicated
    • Consult with physician when patient needs are outside the PA scope of practice or when the diagnosis or treatment plan is unclear
  • Participate in the health‑care team
    • Promote communication within the team and with other interdisciplinary health‑care staff
    • Act as a resource to members of the team
    • Collaborate with primary care team for program development
    • Act as liaison with outside agencies as needed
    • Collaborate with hospital staff by consulting and rounding on patients if designated by the specialty
  • Other duties as assigned
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the operating room for thoracic surgical procedures
  • Provide inpatient care and participate in clinic visits
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons and advanced practice providers to ensure optimal patient outcomes
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree – Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program
Preferred Qualifications
  • New graduates may be considered
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in thoracic surgery or related surgical experience preferred
Licenses/Certifications
  • Licensed Physician Assistant – MN Board of Medical Practice required upon hire
  • ACLS‑BLS Tier 2 – Multisource required within 180 days
  • Certification as Physician Assistant – NCCPA required upon hire
  • Drug Enforcement Administration credential required upon hire
Physical Demands
  • Medium Work:
    Lift weight up to 32 lbs occasionally (Allina Safe Patient Moving Policy); up to 25 lbs frequently
Schedule

Full‑time (1.0 FTE) – will consider .8–1.0 FTE

Hours:

Monday–Friday, 8‑hour shifts

Call/Rounding:
None currently; may change in the future

Location

Position is located in Minneapolis on the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Campus and includes outreach at our Coon Rapids location.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $131,144 to $159,432 per year (base pay; actual rate varies with experience, education, and union agreement if applicable)
